Hello all

I wanted to see if anyone was able to provide a little more information on this sword.
Only history I have is my grandfather brought it back from his time in WWII. He was an engineer at Guadalcanal.

I removed the handle and have pictures of the tang, but I certainly can't translate.
@38" overall length
@26" for blade

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for taking the time to look.

Hi,
Your sword is signed Yoshihide and was made October, Showa 15 or 1940.
There is most likely a small arsenal stamp above the inscriptions, just out of the photo. This stamp indicates this is a non traditionally made sword.

The koshirae (scabbard/fittings) is a late war production known as a Type 3 in Japan and "late-war army" in the west. In the past these were referred too as "Marine-Landing Swords" and occasionally you will still hear them referred to as such. This term is incorrect as they were made for Army officers.

That should be October 1944 as it says 昭和十九年。
