I bought this sword for $5 at a knife show a few years back, and I'd like to try making a replacement pommel/handle for it. If you could help ID the sword so I can find a picture of what it originally looked like, that would be great.

Welcome aboard.

If you were to search for fraternal sword on the internet, or specifically Ebay, you will see these usually had a knight's helmet or Roman centurion helmet pommel. Patterns vary somewhat between fraternal groups but I don't think this is a Freemason's Knights Templar or other Masonic level. Rather I think it might be for the Knights of Saint John, Knights Hospitaller or Knights of Malta.

The grip also seems to need repairing or replacement. Finding parts could easily surpass the cost of finding an intact sword.. Alternately, one might find just a random pommel or make one out of a lamp fitting, curtain rod end. You would be surprised at what you might found that would work. A search for sword fittings should turn up parts.

There is a very good current book out there for American fraternal swords but unless pursuing a collection of them, simple internet searches will yield lots of pictures.

Cheers
