I am forming the design for a full blown Sword in the back of my mind.

It is coming as a combination Chinese War sword with a curved blade and something
like a Pirates cutlass.
A modernistic version, but definetly a FULL blown
usable Sword. Professional HT made from 5160 or 1095 for the first one.

Has anybody tried one of these?
What pitfalls am I headed for?
Guess I better order some more Belts..

Hey Robert. I recently finished my first sword design (with the help of Ted Frizzell), and it sounds similar to what you're talking about.

I worked/reworked several dummie blanks out of wood to achieve what I was trying for: balance, speed and massive cutting power. It is super fast and cuts better than any other sword I've had. I'll be putting it through some tests in the future and will post the results on the forums.

20" blade, 31" OA
Steel: 5160, 3/16" thickness, "Antiqued" Patina finish.

I did the handle in Wine Dymondwood, buffed to gloss, hollow pins. I chose it for its water resistance and hardness.

These pictures are terrible, but you can get the idea.

Definitely stock up on belts. I can't think of any suggestions, but maybe my pictures will give you an idea of what you DON'T want to do! :)

Thanks for the compliment Laurence (?). That means a lot coming from such a talented knife maker (I've admired Rhino Knives for a while now).

I want to appologise for the "pissy" post above, Robert. I must have had one too many coffees tonight. I guess I feel a little inadaquate posting pix in this section of the forums, so I got a little neurotic for a moment.

Well John, I like the design also. I may try something like it soon. It looks light, fast and may have some thrusting use. I don't htink Robert snubbed you. If you responded to each post the thread would be 6 pages long. I like the sword though!

Hey John just got back. I like your sword must have taken some work. Nice curves looks quick!
Mine will be a little wider I think, depends on how it grinds on wood first.

Kumdo, that sword looks mighty handy! Good blade size too!

Here is one that Jimmy Fikes made a while back, he calls it the Jungle Honey, and it's a whacker and a half! There was a video floating around, Recluse might have it now? Show Jimmy takeing some rather large trees down with this sword and other items as well, worth a watch! but here is the sword, he really liked this one a lot, Jimmy isn't making knives/swords now, rumor has it he is tattoing somewhere? He is a unique individual if ever there was one!

I think the blade on this is about 20" as well, the handle is almost as long, a lot of handle there to place grips about anywhere you'd like to get the most out of that sword, you can choke up on it or reach back near the end and let her flail!

Wow. That is cool looking sword, Gary! Very unique. I wonder if his tatoos are as wicked as his blade designs! :)

I would love to see the video of the sword in action. Google, here I come.
