I was looking to purchase the sword of Hiro. Fans of the show HEROES will know what I'm talking about. I located the United Cutlery version pretty quickly.

(ex: http://www.amazon.com/UNITED-CUTLER...e=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1220669805&sr=8-1
amazon.com was the most generic link I could find)

Looks like a nice prop but I read a review saying it was pretty poorly made. Now I don't buy United cutlery very often so should I be surprised? What should I expect out of this particular sword?

A few statements: no I don't plan to go out LARPing, I'm not going to go out and try and kill a tree with it, nor do I think it's a "real" sword.

I just don't want to say show it to a friend and have the blade fall off or something like that.

Following that up. I also found this version of the sword
www.globalgear.com.au/prod2969.htm

This one sounds like a "real" sword. Has anyone had dealings with this company? Assuming you wanted to buy the sword of Hiro is this the version you'd buy?

It's about $100 more than the other version but I'd much rather spend a little more to get a quality piece. Opinions?

Hmm well I'd like to know how that works exactly, typically when United (or anyone else for that matter) buys the rights no one else can turn them out so I'd love to know how both outfits have access to the licensing rights. Alternately they are both selling the same item but one is just charging more for it (seems very likely). Either way if you only intend to display it either one of those items should suit your needs. You aren't buying a "quality piece" for 250 dollars. A "more quality piece" maybe, but not a "quality piece" if that makes any sense. Decorator swords of course do have their place as well...

I've noticed that you can get it here with a snazzy shoulder stap and display stand to for an extra 10 bucks...

Ah, thanks for the reply. Yeah it's primarily a display piece I was just thinking I didn't want to wind up with something built out of aluminum foil and duct tape when the second one I posted looked a little more solid. Tough call.

I have an email into that second place to see if I can get a few questions answered by them.

If I hear anything interesting I'll post it here.

It will be interesting to hear what they have to say. Based on the cursory glance I did, both that one and the Budk one appear to be visually identical and be made of the same materials, the global gear one appears to simply have more add copy touting its qualities... and of course a higher price tag.

I'm typically the ultimate advocate of "you get what you pay for" but in this case...

I find it interesting that they can even make replicas of it at ALL considering that the one used in the show is either a modified Hanwei PPK or a total rip-off of one.

buy the cheaper one.

or just buy Adams Glyph and glue it to a Chen sword so you can cut something if you want to.
