I am interested in learning about how to wield a sword and wondered if anyone out there knew of any good training videos? Thanks......

You might want to check out some of John Clements stuff if you are interested in western swords. I'm sure there must be a plethora of stuff for katana available. I would suggest that like any other martial art it is unrealistic to expect to learn more then the very basics from a video or book.

Hi,

With all due respect to Triton.

I do not trust John's interpretations of historical manuals. I shall say no more on the subject except that I am not the only member of the WMA community who feels this way.

The best online resource for a beginner in my opinion is the training manual available for download at the AEMMA website that deals with the longsword. Once you have your head around this, you can start looking at historical manuals yourself. Silver (1599) is available on the web in English modern enough to read it straight off the page.

Basics most defintely are the best. Have a look at WWII combatives for example.
Cheers
Stu.

I have to give Stuart a "ditto" here.

I don't care to badmouth John Clements either, but Stuart's remarks are pretty fair. Clements has done an incredible amount of good for the WMA world in general and he deserves our thanks for that.

I haven't seen his videos, so can't comment on them specifically. But for that matter, of the few videos I have seen, I haven't seen anything worth the time it took to watch them.

When all is said and done however, I'd imagine that Clements' videos are probably head and shoulders above what generally passes for swordsmanship videos out there.(It wouldn't take much!)

They might be worth a look.

Hey Guys,

Just for the record I'm no John Clements cheerleader myself or anything. Neither am I qualified in any way to comment on the accuracy of his interpretations one way or another.

What I was trying to do was give Chains some sort of starting point. From what I have read his stuff is probably better then a lot of junk that is currently available on the web and in stores. Since we still don't know for sure exactly what Chains is interest in the whole recommendation might be moot...

As other people have stated there are tons of videos out there.
Give a little more information on what you would like to study and we can go from there..

BUT,, whatever you choose , I do not recommend using any type or sharpened sword for quite a while (years)
.
Starting off with something wooden will do you just fine.

As far as video training ..you will miss too much.. find a qualified instructor in whatever sword style you decide to follow.
