i am new to the world of swords. From what i have read 5160 and even better (?) S7 are at the top of the list. I am looking for impact strength ballanced nicely with flexibility and edge retention. Any info on steels and peoples/manufacturer websites would be much appreciated. I am looking to spend under 1.5k even better 1k, but as i am new to this field that may not be enough so will flex as needed. I have been looking into millerbroblades.com Any advise on websites steels or anything for a guy new in the game. Thank you all for the support.

The typical automotive springs 5160, 9260 would be a good choice .My old fencing swords were 9260.

Thanks. Im thing of having one custom made. Only because i cant find any good sites or companies. Do you know of any i should look into?

For modern production of historic and modern themes, a dealer such as Kult of Athena offers an opportunity to browse many sources. I can understand your concerns about steel but it is as important that any steel be heat treated appropriately. . There are innumerable types of steel favorable for sword use and being more specific as to what you expect from a sword and more exactly what type of sword you are interested in will narrow the twenty question aspect of others able to make suggestions.

Cheers

I'm pretty fond of CPM 3V, personally. It's very tough, and has great edge retention. I've worked with 5160 as well, and that's also a great sword steel. Very tough, and does fine on edge retention, although it seems to need to be tempered softer than 3V for the same toughness. I've also heard about L6 being pretty solid too. Anything mete recommends will be great, if it's heat treated well.

Your first priority should be to figure out what you want out of a sword. I'm not sure how many folks on here work in your price range for custom swords outside of Miller Bros and Archer Here (Scorpion Swords, IIRC), and they both work in the carbon steels, which tend to be less expensive in materials cost. I don't know of many outside myself who do 3V in your price range. David Stifle makes some nice pieces, as does Stuart Branson, but I don't know what budgets they cater to. Dan Keffeler makes some of my very favorite pieces, but he's well outside your price range.
