Weren't there used to be slots on the spines on thick knives during olden times that were called swordbreakers? It was supposed to catch a rapier and be able to break it with a twist. Anybody ever hear of those?

I believe it was to catch, not to break per se. I could be and have been wrong before though. Where is Hank Reinhardt when we need him? RIP

The japanese Jitte was designed to catch and break swords. it didn't have an edge though, it was more of a baton.
