Swords & Burglars

A friend of mine woke up in the middle of the night when he heard some burglars climbing in a window. He has a pistol but he prefers his sword for home defense. It's a modern reproduction of a highly decorated but very functional medieval Spanish broadsword; he paid about $1200 for it (more than his pistol cost ... but it's prettier)....

So he got the sword and came out of the bedroom in his skivvies, half-awake, with a Maglite in one hand and the broadsword in the other. When he saw the burglars he woke up all the way and went for them. When the burglars saw him they went out the window a lot faster than they had come in.... He didn't chase them, just turned on the lights and called the police. A patrol car was nearby and they found the burglars a few blocks away, still running, and they didn't even try to deny it -- they seemed grateful to the police for rescuing them from the freaking MANIAC with a SWORD THIS LONG that was chasing them!

Word gets around ... my friend became famous in the local criminal community. He would probably never have been burglarized again if those change-of-address kits the post office gives out had cards to send to the local burglars.... Four years later, when he was living in a different house on the other side of town, he came home one day and found two burglars in the house -- a different two than the first time. They were between him and his sword but he had his 10mm Tanfoglio in his shoulder holster.... When they saw the gun they exited, still carrying his tv.

When the police arrived they asked him, "Why the fork didn't you shoot them???"

He said, "If I'd a shot 'em they would a dropped my tv."

As it turned out it took the police a couple of days to catch up with them and the tv was long gone by then; he never did recover it -- but when those two found out it had been the MANIAC WITH THE SWORD's house they'd hit they freaked out! They counted themselves lucky to be alive.

As long as he stays in the same house I doubt he'll ever have any trouble with burglars again.

Cougar related this story in Usual Suspect chat last week and I asked him to post it here.

I thought sure that someone would have something to say about a case where the sword actually served very well in a defensive mode.

Anyone?

This reminds me of our neighborhood watch. We have gained a bit of a reputation amongst all criminals and non-criminals as well. Our neighbor was away for part of the day going fishing and his wife was at the store and their 6 year old daughter was at home alone. It was late evening so it was not real bright out. Anyhow these two guys tried to break into the house, not knowing that someone was home. She called one of the watch members and he conference called all of us. Within 5 minutes of her calling they were surrounded by armed men with everything ranging from AK-47 variants to bolt-action Mausers, and one guy even brought a machete cause he couldn't get his safe open as fast as he felt necessary. We have a bit of a unique neighborhood watch here, lol. While we have a pretty small criminal community in our area, they all make a distinct point to not pick any targets in our area. We have had no break-ins or adult vandalisms since then. Kids still occasionally cause some trouble, but kids will always do that from time to time.

It's sad that more people don't realize that when it comes right down to it, they can't count on other people to save them every time. This nation has worked very hard to weed out all remnants of our survival instinct, but still there are those who exercise it and make an impression. Just think how much burglarlies would drop off if everyone made this much of a fuss about home defense..

In all reality I think the friend was pretty darned lucky that one of the burglars either did not have a gun or did not have the presence of mind to use it. When faced with such a situation we all have that fight or flight instinct. Fortunately for the friend the burglars went with option 2 instead of option 1. If they had decided to fight instead and been armed with a cheap 38 caliber hand gun the friend could be very well pushing up daisies someplace right now. I reiterate swords are for fun, guns are for home defense.

Generally I agree, though if they were within striking distance and did not have their weapon at ready he most certainly had the advantage, and a broadsword will do much much more damage than any .38.....

He might have had the advantage in this particular situation although the thought occurs to me that he would have had even more of an advantage if he would have picked up his 10mm instead of the sword that night. As for doing more damage... well that assumes that he knows how to use the sword.:)
