swords hmmmm

If you are not looking to spend a lot of money, but still want something decent you could do worse than the Hanwei Paul Chen swords. They range from under $100.00 to about $1200.00.

What style of sword are you interested in?

http://www.bugei.com/ has good, functional blades.

Just remember, if you don't get any training with them, well, you're on the fast walkway to the emergency room. And who knows if they'll be able to reattach that thumb or not.

Paul Chen Practical Katana. I have the Practical Katana Plus, and it's a beautiful sword. Looks good, feels good, and apparently stands up well to cutting. Of course, you get what you pay for. The Practical Katana is the least expensive "good" sword I would buy, and you can get a lot better stuff for a lot more money.

And in the "it don't look traditional but it sho can cut!!!" category:
Rob Criswell katana.
Himalayan Imports katana.

440C good for a Blade
NO.
If you want to use it, get a carbon steel blade and keep it oiled. If you want a wall hanger, get stainless. There are some rare exceptions, but I think 440C is a good knife steel, but too brittle for a sword.

Hi Omega Doom. Just curious what you gonna use the sword for? Is this for shark/gator hunting? Or what knife did you get for shark/gator hunting? :D

Dawson has been making swords of 440C for two decades.
These are not traditional swords. I would consider Bugei the next step up
but these can be pricey.

as a generic rule (In regards to Japanese blades) make sure it is differentially hardened. Being clay tempered makes a huge difference in how the blade can and will perform.
Everyone who comes into the shop wants a folded sword (Even though 9 of 10 would never CONSIDER dropping that kind of coin) but the folding is not nearly as important these days. Yes it still improves the steel. It was important back in the day because Nihon only had crappy steel. They had to find new ways to work it to make it not suck.
But look for blades with that temper line on them (the real temper line. not just buffed on.) That's what will make the difference.

It seems quite obvious, when hunting sharks, use a good shark knife ( will also deanimate gators ), but when confronted by a Swordfish, a good sword is appropriate, none of that TV crap.
