Hey all, starting to get the sword bug and looking around the net found a couple of places that have some good info on swords, Japanese swords for the most part and wondered if there would be enough interest here on the Planets best Forum for a sword forum......I know we have a lot of sections now, but Swords are NOT just bigger knives, they are an entity unto themselves.....

One of the sites I ran into is by Bugei, a nice little forum;

So, what do ya think guys/gals ?

PS, I'm searching for a Fogg Wakizashi if anyone has a line on one....

I like them. I think a sword forum would go over very well here.
Spark, Mike What do you think?
There is plenty of interest in swords here.

I love swords!!
I sweet talked the currator of the local museum into showing me the items they had in storage(not on display).
There is a world of difference between the modern "replica's" and the actual swords that were used in the "old" days.

I'd go for it in a BIG way!
There's a sword forum out there, but it's not UBB and it's really kind of cumbersome to navigate.
Whaddya think Mike? Got room?

I just got my first and am very interested in swords. This forum would force me to spend even more time glued to the monitor reading BF - will the madness ever end?

A sword forum or a military edge weapons forum (swords, bayonets, issued knives)would be nice. These subjects are often discussed on threads posted all over these forums.

Swords are great!

Too bad it's so hard to find an affordable, well made repro be it a Japanese katana, Chinese jian, a sabre, what have you.

Most of the mass-market ones sold through knife stores, or martial arts mags, are gawdy looking ornamental ones.

Even the better made sharpened ones are cumbersomely made out of a heavy 440 derivative steel. You need to be the Hulk just to slice with the darn thing! You just can't make a sword out of 440. It's not right.

Check out Emerson's website: http://www.emersonknives.com

It shows him hand pounding steel in Japan, with a master swordsmith. Hopefully he'll produce some decent ones in the future.

If there is enough of a demand for Sword Forums, we're more than happy to open one or more. The key is

1. Is there going to be enough of a demand for the forum to remain open, and

2. Who will moderate it / them?

Full Tang Clan,
The Paul Chen katanas that Cas Iberia sells are great for the money.
I have the Musashi Miyamoto Daito.
These aren't wall hangers. They're the real thing.
I was very surprised to see how well it was fit and finished. It's actually better than i've seen on some custom swords selling for many times more. The only thing i didn't like was the leather wrapping. They pieced it together because i assume that didn't have leather long enough and I don't like the way it looks. It's ugly and doesn't belong there anyway. I plan to get it re wrapped the right way with the right material and then it will be real sweet.
Check some of the internet lowballers and you should be able to get it at a hefty discount. This Chen line is well worth looking over. There isn't anything like it for the money. I haven't seen the Naginata yet but it looks interesting.

A sword forum would be GRRRRREEAAT!!
Swords are one of my first and strongest loves. A sword forum would be a great addition to this fine site. This is already the place I spend most of my free time. I guess it will get only better!! Great idea!!

I think a sword-oriented forum would be wonderful. The issues of swords and swordmaking are profoundly different from knives, even big knives. Somewhere between 12" and 18" in blade length the rules change and it's a whole new ballgame.

Snoopy, nice looking Criswell Katana you have there! I had the Wakizashi short sword, rugged rascal and sharp, but I felt the very edge was left too thick on mine....how is the edge on yours? I mean, mine is razor sharp, will shave hair, but when trying to trim off an offending branch it had a tough time slicing through, unlike my tanto I made, that went through branches with ease.

The Criswell swords are 1/4" A2 tool steel, he says he uses a 10" wheel to grind a shallow hollow grind, very tough edge but not like the traditional edges found on Japanese swords, the near zero secondary bevel grinds that allow the sword to cut so well.....

Spark...perhaps Bugei would be interested in dropping by and hosting a forum here? I don't know any of the fellows there, did see them put a demo on at the Blade Show last year, impressive stuff! It might not intereferre with their existing forum, but might add to hits to their site via BladeForums, just a thought, so if any of you guys/gals are tight with them, see if they'd be interested. Worth a shot! (or slice)

I would also be interested in a sword forum. I have just recently started seriously considered buying one and would like to discuss it with others more knowledgeable than myself.

Like Spark said we would be happy to turn one on but we would need traffic to warrant it and I believe we would get that but more importantly we would need a recognized authority on swords to run it. In fact we would be happy to host the Bugei forum here if they would like more exposure.
www.swordforum.com is a great site and we have offered them a forum here as well. I just don't have the time right now to pursue it but if any of you wish to take on the challenge, be my guest

Mike the swordforum is a great place . Its is very pure in the forum there. Maybe a forum a little less formal.
Moderator choices should be easy.

G2 - The grind on mine comes down to a surprisingly thin edge, actually thinner than some of my knives. Not as thin as my Dozier Prohunter, but close none the less. I enjoy doing some weekend hacking and have found it cuts down the small trees and limbs with the best of them. I need to work on my technique - glad to hear the new forum is open!

Thanks Snoopy, guess I'm going to have to call Rob and see what's up with the one I have....

Gary;I'd have to agree with Tom on taking a good look at Cas Iberia's line made by Paul Chen. They are very good blades for the money and in fact some of the swords in the Bugei line are Paul Chen's blades but at alot higher mark-up.Chow,Ralph
