i am starting to collect swords and was wondering how good the paul chen swords were. i am not looking for swords that are merely decorative, but ones that can handle actual use (although i have no interest in shouting "there can be only one"). do the paul chen swords meet these requirements?

thanks guys

oh, i posted in here because it said i could:

"Your area to discuss knives in general: Folders, Fixed blades, Swords & knife related equipment, etc. Take off topic posts to the Community Center & manufacturer specific questions to their respective forums."

see, it says swords

the forum i posted on said it could include sword discussion. there was no reason for it to be moved. i even made that point in my intial post

It'll get more attention from people more knowledgable on the subject here.

It's a matter of do you want to collect real swords or modern replicas?
While Paul Chen are ok to play with, they're not true Nihonto (Japanese swords),
just Chinese made replicas that look sort of like Japanese swords.

What is your price range?

Stainless steel movie inspired wallhangers: Pretty but impractical for any serious use can range from $50 to several hundred.

Medium grade stuff: perhaps good enough for your uses: light cutting (NO hitting 2x4s or trees) can be had for a couple of hundred on up.

More serious high end 'production' and customs can range from $300 (at some estimates which i find too low) to many thousands with a good 'user' level twixt $750 to $1200.

Do a lot of research. Steer away from sales phrases like 'battle ready' and 'tree-splitting sharp'. Do not expect that 95% of what is out there to take blade-on-blade or serious abuse without damage. Though steel is tough, no steel is indestructable like in the movies.

I tend toward http://www.angelsword.com/ for sheer toughness (and a liberal reasonable abuse lifetime breakage garrantee) though there are many others (and many strong opinions).I have owned one of their blades and directly know many other customers who tend heavily toward the abuse end of use because they can.
Search out some sword forums. There is a lot of great info for the asking if you remember most people want to steer you toward their preferences or their product. It just depends on what you think you are looking for... that may change suddenly. Some are not especially friendly toward Angel Sword so don't ask or expect good reviews about their product line. AS has their own forum accessable through their main site wherein many loyal customers of all experience levels will happily tell their experiences.
Good luck. You are on a very slippery slope toward a potentially expen$ive hobby, if you do it right. Inexpensive and cheap crap will only disappoint and frustrate your experience.
Until you have some experience ebay is rarely your friend in this quest.

In about the 1500 range... try www.atrimasa.com No hamon, but some of the better fit and finish and an UBER tough blade. If you're really interested in a cutter, ask for the Ookiyatsu (if they still make em).
P.S. Swords do not equal knives nor machetes. They're bloody dangerous without supervision and training when cutting... make sure you have someone who knows how to treat arterial bleeding among other large trauma.

There are a variety of options from your initial post I suspect that you are looking for Japanese style swords. From your question about Hanwei stuff I suspect that your budget is probably < 1000 dollars. For that sort of money Hanwei is a decent option (with caveats noted above) another is Kris Cutlery at www.kriscutlery.com If I am wrong with either of my hypoetheses let us have some more information and we will see what we can do.

thanks for everything. oh, and it's not a specific sword type (japanese for instance) that i was looking for. i just wanted a sword that was an actually sword, not some decoration that looks like a sword.

btw, i fence sabre and i work as a paramedic so my safety is not an issue. not that i would every swing one of these swords around

Safety is ALWAYS an issue as you should well know.
Any, first responder is a hero, I could not be a paramedic every day. I just don't want to see some of those things unless I must.:barf:

Oh in that case your options have expanded considerably. Check out www.armor.com and www.albionarmorers.com for two very good manufacturers of western swords. They are pricier than chen or Kriscutlery but in swords as with many things you often get what you pay for. Not always, but often. In the case of those two manufacturers you get more then what you pay for.
