Syderco and blade length

Can someone tell me why so many blades manufacturer by Spyderco have 3 1/8" for a length. Maybe I am being self centered but with a 3" legal limit it puts these designs over the limit. The Lil' Tempest is one that comes to mind first off. Would it be a big difference to make that blade 2 7/8" and it would be legal in many more places.

I am no knife law expert, but I see laws that are under 2", under 3", under 3 1/2", under 4" etc. If you are going over 3" you should probably make it 3 3/8". Are there many places that have a number of 3 1/4"? That would be the only reason that I could see to make a 3 1/8 " blade.

Please explain the thinking behind the blade length decision process for a company? Clay

Hi Clay.

We try to stay under certain lengths. Under, 3" under 3/5", etc.

There have been a few instances where this was not the case. We've had Delicas or Lil' Temperance over 3" by a small amount. This was done in error and was or is being changed at the next run.

In such cases as the Para, I couldn't get the blade any smaller because of the handle design and didn't want to make the blade look even smaller when compared to the handle.

In the Danish folder, the blade is actually shortened to 2.5" (70mm) because that is their legal limit. It does look a little strange in the UK penknife handle, but it will serve the "test" for the market.

Good question though.

It is rare that you get to speak to the man that is in charge. Thanks for taking your time on a holiday weekend to answer my question. Your product has been growning on me. I find it to be quality at a reasonable price point. Thanks for the great products and I look forward to the next run of the Lil' Temperance. Clay

Hello Clay: We here in Missouri are blessed with a 4 inch folding blade limit ( at least for now). If the blade length is really that critical I would consider using the Dodo. I carry 2 knives with me ( Renegade & Dodo) and I am finding myself using my Dodo more and more all the time. If you would ever be lucky enough to find one of the older Micarta C-39 small Dyads then that would be my ultimate choice. Good Luck JD Spydo :)

I own a Dodo now and it is growing on me. The Lil' Tempest is what I think is ideal and I was bidding on a Yojimbo but lost that bid. I'll end up with one of the Yojimbos soon enough. The titanium Salsas also seem to be nice. Wide short blade with a compression lock. Spyderco and Sal make so many nice products that is is hard to pick them all. Then I am a believer in getting to know your knife and having that familiarity with it. The daily rotation of EDC blade can cause some confusion when you must react quickly. I have a small collection, but actually try to carry the same knife often and leave the others at home. When I switch I carry that knife for a while. Trying to find something that I can live with for a while and be under 3". Thanks for the comments.

Clay,

We're in the same boat here in Michigan. It seems my state recently put a blade length into the law. 3 inches. Which now means I can't (and won't) legally carry two-thirds of my collection. So now my Dodo, my Meerkats and my Crickets have been seeing alot more EDC time.

Sal,

Are the next run Delica's available yet? I really like to replace mine older Delica's with the plastic clip.

I'm sure there is a loop hole to everything...as there is to the limits on blade size. You can always join the Military or Law Enforcement..which would allow you to carry a bigger folder or knife. :p

Well here is what I think about the blade limits. We are now a nation at war. All I hear the president, the media and all the talking heads saying that we are fighting that war for the sake of freedom. I guess I am missing something here. We the people need to stand up and say that these utterly ridiculous blade length limits are totally unreasonable ( which they are). If we are a free country, then let's be a free country and demand our freedoms back that were covertly taken away from us. Our fighting men & women are not in the Middle East fighting for us to have stricter laws; NO!!! They are fighting so we can have freedoms the way our founding fathers meant for us to have. We are responsible adults, we should be able to carry any knife we deem necessary for work, pleasure ( hunting & fishing ect.), and self defense. I am tired of these out of touch politicians passing such ridiculous laws. The people passing these laws don't want the responsibility of protecting us. But they don't want us to have the means of protecting ourselves either. I mean no disrespect to any of you fine folks here on this great Forum. This is America and silly, ridiculous 3 inch knife laws are not Freedom. Thank you and please join the AKTI.
