My wife needed a knife for basic chores around the farm - opening feed bags, cutting bales, etc. Based on discussion on this forum I bought her the Native from Wally World for $40 with the S30V two weeks ago. She loves it - clips it in her pocket and it is there when she wants it. She likes it because it is easy to open and close - some of the locks on other knives she cannot release since they are so tight. Pretty dang sharp too. Anyway she loves it. Good advice on this board.

The S30V native is a great knife for the money.I have used one for a while working in a warehouse and it works great.

I’ am planning to buy a Native, but which version is the best choice? The Spyderco Native III, VG10 or the one mentioned above?

In my humble opinion, you would be hard-pressed to find a better knife for less than $50. I can't say I've treated my Native very well, but that's all the more reason in which I love it because I still keep coming back to it and it keeps on going. It will certainly turn you on to S30V.

I truly have a special place in my heart for Golden Colorado made, Spyderco Native models. The S-30V is truly a great pick. But on the other hand I have one made with 440V and believe me that is a special knife too. Crucible blade steels truly are special too.

Great selection you made ;)

S30V Native from WallyWorld $39.99 plus tax. Great value. SV30 gets scary sharp. The pocket clip black paint/finish comes off easily but it looks better with it off.

VG-10 and S30v have their strengths and weaknesses, I like'em both and consider them relatively equivilent. I have one of the wally world Natives, it is a great value and screaming sharp; it does see use, and the edge retention is excellent. If their is a better $40 folder out there, I'd like to see it. I also have a Seki-City Delica and an Al Mar Shrike in VG-10, and they are about as sharp as a knife can possibly get- a couple of folding scalpels :) I have several blades in both steels, and the one thing they all have in common is a serious level of sharp.

Glad she likes it, I had a native but lost it :( it was probably my favorite EDC I've ever had. It was comfortable in the pocket, had good steel, and was not an arm and a leg to replace if lost.

I like the Native III because of the different handle design. It is wider and fills my hand better. The VG-10 blade has a different swedge as well and makes the asthetics of the blade more appealing, to me anyways. I am now in the process of collecting various Native models. Of all the knives I own the Native III is my favorite one.

Both the VG-10 and S30v are great blade steel. Nothing scientific but I would give the S30V a slight advantage in edge retention.

What he said.

My Wally World Native is my favorite go-to folder. It's sharp, the choil gives me a comfortable grip, and it's inexpensive enough that I'm not afraid to abuse it.

My wife has edc carried her s30v native for over a year. She loves it. She tried a paramilitary and went back to the native. Did the same thing with the ZDP delica I bought her. she likes her native.
