Sykes-Fairbairn Mainenance Question

Hi. I've been given a Sykes-Fairbairn dagger as a gift, and it's got a few rust spots on it (not a new one obviously).

I've got various mineral oils and a sharpening stone from my diving dagger, and some nevr-dull that I've used on my sword before now, but all of those are shiny finished items - I've never had to do any maintenance or repair on a blued item, like the black-finish on this dagger. Do you have any advice or recommendations for me please?

0000 Steel Wool and WD-40 are OK on blued items. Go gently and you should be fine. Good Luck:thumbup:

Thank you, I'll try that.

I did see a restorer at a museum working on a black iron grate, and she was using tannic acid to reduce the rust, and it didn't seem to harm the finish. It would be interesting to try, but I'll go the tried and true way (that and I've never seen any tannic acid for sale ;)).
