I like good leather sheaths. I don't like using them in humid environments. Kydex and Eagle/BHI style sheaths are nice too, but good leather just has more character, personality, etc.

I got some cheap boots made of waterproof synthetic leather. I noticed that the stuff is very tough and while it wears like leather, it doesn't abrade as easily.

A bunch of stuff today is made of synthetic leather instead of real leather, and performs very similarly. Leather is probably tougher as a whole, but synthetic will not rot or abrade as easily, is waterproof, and cheap.

Has anyone tried using synthetic leather for knife sheaths? Is there a reason that there aren't any?

They will be nowhere close to good leather sheaths, but for a good, economical, waterproof sheath, they may a good alternative to Kydex.
