Hello Folks,

As you all know, here in Europe kydex is hard to come by. But I found a company here who is the dealer for kydex in Belgium. Now I ordered a few plates in calcutta black, and we talked a bit about knives. Since the guy is a synthetics dealer, I now have a load of handle-scale size kydex-100, sometimes even an inch thick. And in a load of colours.
All samples to show to future customers.
I was wondering, wouldn't that make good handle scales?
Kydex for handle, kydex for sheath... Steel and kydex. Might be a good idea or am I mistaken?

Lmao, I used an old rubber mat for handle materials once. I bet kydex would feel real nice in the hand. Not sure how you'd finish it tho.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Thanks for your Reply ! (faster then I tought)

I tested it already for that.. It polishes like a superglue-finish on wood.
But it looks nicer bead-blasted.
Since I never did some real hard-testing of kydex, how durable is in in comparison of like G-10, Lexan, Polycarbonate or Micarta?

Next week I'have scans of it of scales on an old knife. Stay tuned !

Hey Bart..

The idea has also crossed my mind as well...

If it was done,, it would be a material that is easily shaped,,even by hand,, and will polish up Very nice..

The polish probably won't last long..

With 1" thick kydex it would be fairly durable for sure...

Bart,
Years ago I used Kydex as handle scales on my Model 4 folders. Looked and felt good in the hand, then carbon fiber and G-10 came along. I imagine there are still a few out there.

I know there are a few pictures of knives in the recent years of "Knives" that are handled in kydex.

One of them it's wrapped around the spine of the full tang knife and riveted in two or three places.

And obviously there were some pretty spiffy knives handled in it if Kit used to use it.

Thanks folks,

scales are in the making folks, I am gonna give it a try.
But how about melting kydex and using it as a paint or dipping the knife in it? After a whole lot of layers you would have like a plastic handle like on the SOG SEAL 2000. Anyone ever tried that?
I tried it before with polycarbonate and PVC, but those bubble when they get too hot.

Extremes in temperatures had no effect. If a human can stand the heat, the kydex sheath can. I imagine if you left it laying on a car dashboard in Arizona in July, it might soften up some, but who does that with a good knife?
