Sypderco puts Boye dent in Native

Darn. I like the Native a lot, and ordered a couple to have on hand as backups and gifts. But the new models have a Boye dent ground in the lock bar.

This does nothing for the aesthetics of the knife, and actually makes it almost impossible for me to close one-handed.

I sure didn't ask for this "improvement" and I hope they're not charging me more for it.

While I'm hoping, I also hope they don't put these dents in any more models. Does anybody know if they plan to, or already have? I'm specifically concerned about the lightweight version of the Delica.

If anybody wants to sell me their old model Native, I'm in the market.

I have not handled any of the newer models with the BD, but I had thought it seemed like a good idea.

I have an older native in Gin-1 without the dent that I really like, but I was considering the newer with VG-10 steel, which I really like. However, if the BD does in fact keep you from closing the native with one hand, I guess I'll pass.

I like the Boye dent. It increases the overall safety. I've never had any trouble with one hand closing.

Paul: Here's more detail on my beef. I can still close the knife one-handed, but my thumb has to be in just the right spot. This means that I may have to reposition my thumb and make two or three attempts, when it used to work first time, every time.

I understand the design intention to prevent accidental closings, and agree in theory. But in practice, I've never experienced anything close to an accidental closing with this model.

And you'd think that once I'd shifted my grip and put my thumb on the lock bar, accidental closing would have been ruled out, and that closing would be fairly simple.

I've used a Boye knife with the Boye dent, and it doesn't seem to require nearly the correct placement that the Native requires.

Guess I'm rambling now.

I have a large Dyad with the Boye dent, and actually think it makes it easier to close the blade. Maybe it's just a question of finger (or thumb) size. Or maybe the lock on your Native just needs some break-in time.

I haven't handled a "dented" Native. The Calypso Jr. and Delica have stiffer springs than the Native. The handles are also thicker on the Native. Maybe that has something to do with it?

I've found that dent or no dent, the Native is one of the most awkward opening/closing Spydercos that I've ever owned, one-handed or otherwise. It's boxy, the hole is a little small, and I've handled the non-dent model and promptly ran far, far away since the lock bar is so long and spring so weak. I actually felt it depress under my palm just by squeezing a little. Mine has the dent and does not do this, but I still never carry the thing since it is kinda fat and boxy for a knife this size. My other Spydies are nice and slim and I do not notice them in my pocket, but this one makes its presence known in an uncomfortable sort of way. I do love that 440V blade though. I use it around the house a lot --cuts really nice and I have not had to sharpen it up since I bought it.

I have a 440V/Boye Dent Native FRN which I like very much, the boye dent is a big improvement in my opinion, and lessens the chances of accidentally disengaging the lock. As for one-hand closing, I have two different working methods which are fast and painless... perhaps you should alter your one-hand Native closing method.
I'd like to see the Boye Dent on almost all Spydercos, personally.
