Sypderco Stretch grip question

I just received a stretch and am having an issue that is really ruining it for me. Carrying in the tip up position I can not get a good hold on it in a pocket due to the length of the grip and its placement. I can only grab it with about a finger and a half versus with my sog aegis I can get my whole hand around the handle. It also seems that as I draw the knife it presses into the outside of pocket and attempts to force my fingers off of it. I could eliminate this by using the small bit that sticks out of the pocket on spydies but then deployment is greatly slowed. Does anyone else have this problem and/or know what to do about it?

I have that problem with all my tip-up carry knives, and that's why I love tip-down carry. That's how I carry my Stretch.

Can you provide a pic maybe of how you are carrying? I cannot really picture it.

If I'm not mistaken, the Stretch has a lanyard hole which would be at the upper end of the handle (thru the clip) in tip-up configuration. You could tie a lanyard/fob to it, which would give you something to grab onto.

i did think about lanyard but for defensive use imo its too slow. If your gripping the lanyard your most likely out of reach of your method of deployment or even worse you have to swing and to some degree throw the knife to get to it, none of which is near as fast as a knife which your thumb is already ready to deploy right out of the pocket.

if you want fast deployment with most spyderco go tip down. just pinch it by the hole and "drop" the handle as it goes out of your pocket. the weight of the handle will make it go open while your fingers are still holding the blade.

or ghetto wave ... but its fugly and impractical if you want to use it for anything else than SD

Lanyard is the only workable answer for your problem if your gonna run with tip up carry.
Practice will fix your SD deployment issues.
It worked for me (and my Stretch) as I had the same problem.
I use leather, but, paracord will work just as well.

Good luck with it.

I put a tie-rap on the thumbhole on my tip-up carried spydercos... If I want a fast deployment I pull fast toward the rear of the pocket...If i want a slow and friendly deployment I could do it too...

I really can't picture what you are describing either. Are you trying to stick your whole hand in your pocket to grab the knife?

For a tip up knife I just slide my thumb in my pocket along side the knife. Then pinch the clip with my pointer finger and pull the knife out and it is in my hand. Doesn't really matter how small or big it is as it ends up in my hand in basically the right position to thumb open the blade. I don't carry a knife for self defense though so maybe that won't work well for quick covert deanimation.

Bold text added by me.

Excellent point.

make sure it has a well-designed and tested blood groove so spraying will be optimized during deanimation activities. :)

Alright well, ridiculousness aside, now that I have had my first spyderco, if using for a couple hours qualifies, I have decided it isn't for me. I'm putting it up for trade or sale on the forum. Its a sypderco stretch stainless edition that is now out of production, C90. Check it out if your interested.

Since I cannot really picture the scario you are describing, I can only imagine you will find the same sort of issues with most other knives that do not have a Emerson opener of some kind. Maybe you would want an auto or assisted opening knife.

Good point, same here. I stick my thumb in my pocket, and my index finger on the clip. I pinch the knife and pull it out of my pocket with no real issues. I also do not use a knife for SD, that is what I have a XD .40 S&W for.
