Spyderco Police & Scorpius pass-around review:
by Myamoto Musashi
First impression right out of the box was how heavy these things are. The stainless handles really add a lot to the overall weight. Enough weight to droop my pants when wearing them with baggy pants. The handles bothe had light scratches all over them. Add to that the slippery factor. These things are smooth and I can only imagine dropping one on my foot if I happened to be perspiring at all. I think this is a negative aspect since G-10 scales seem to look new forever.
Bothe knives seem to be only for the right handed people, since the clip cannot be changed to the other side. This is a negative. Luckily, Im right handed, so it didnt bother me too much for the week I had them.
A plus is that the fit and finish was much, much nicer on these stainless models, than on my FRN models. The Scorpius blade lined up perfectly with the lock back piece and this was a nice change from most Spydercos. The Police wasnt lined up there at all.
When closed the Polices blade is centered between the handles, while the Scorpius blade is rubbing on one of the handles.
The Police. This model was the fully serrated version in stainless steel. Its large. Something about its shape, I did not like. There is about an inch of a false double edge on the tip. I just think that weakens the tip. It seemed like an overgrown Endura with a slimmer figure.
It can only be carried tip down and I dont like that way of carry. The fully serrated blade was a joy to use. I am sold on that part of it. I now want to buy a Spyderco fully Spyder-edged tool, but the Civilian is a lot more attractive to me. The full serrations made cutting boxes so easy and fast.
Not much choil on the Police makes me worry about my hand slipping onto the blade during any vigorous activity and Thats no good.
On to the Scorpius. The shape is just weird. The dolphin nose shape at the end of the handle sticks waaay out of your pocket during tip up carry. Yuck. I couldnt get used to it.
One major dislike was that the Spyder-thumb-opening-hole was partially obstructed by the handles when closed. You cant just stick your thumb in and open. You have to wedge your thumb in and push from an angle to get it opened enough for your thumb to comfortably fit in the hole. Design flaw, IMHO. This is reason enough for me to NOT buy this model.
Again with the false double edge tip. This one even longer than the Police. Considering the weight of this thing, its not very much knife. The belly of the blade was an even curve the whole length of the cutting edge. Tip up or Tip down carry is a plus. It was shipped to me with tip-up, so I did not change it.
The choil was great. Partially up on the blade for precise control. The curves fit my hand nicely although a little on the thin side over-all for a super-comfortable grip.
Conclusion. The stainless handles are too slippery for wilderness use or combat use. These things are like Big gentlemen's folders, fit for light duty work. The Handles are not comfortable at all and cold to the touch, unless left in the sun, then too hot to the touch. They both get a big thumbs down from me. Just my opinion.
