My Spyderco Szabo is making a rattling noise when it's closed, but it doesn't make the noise when open.

Ya'll think I should send it in, or is it fine?

I don't want to trouble the nice people at Spyderco with it if it's not a serious problem.

stop pin rattles back and forth when not.under tension, hence being closed? or some other part rattling?

Not sure what part is rattling, but that sounds like it could maybe be the problem?

It's weird, the knife is very solid otherwise, and I carried it as a dedicated SD item for an entire semester, but I've swapped it out for something else until I can get an answer about the rattle.

hold the stop pin some how so it can't rattle back and forth and then shake and see.....

i don't know this model well or if it even uses a stop pin? ive had stop pins rattle in emersons and cold steel tri ads before. thats why i pointed at it. it caused no issues other than rattling when closed.

It's the stop pin/the pin that the compression lock slides over. Thanks for telling me to check, I don't care if it's just cosmetic/makes a tiny bit of noise when closed.

sometimes they are a tad short or the liner/scales are cut a tad cut too deep, etc and allows that. annoying as all out but shouldnt really affect function. course im assuming its just a tad short etc not enough to fail during proper use.

spyderco should fix it for ya if ya feel its too annoying. sometimes people fix it themselves with various products to stop it from sliding so easily, but taking apart a spyderco typically will void the warranty so keep that in mind. so id send it in before doing it yourself. plus none of these solutions to fix yourself are all that great.

Well when I even lightly touch the pin, the rattle stops, so I think it's minimal.

I know they can, I just don't like to bother them with anything that isn't an immediate and function-effecting issue. They got more important stuff than this, since it doesn't appear to effect the function in any way whatsoever.

Yeah, I'm not taking apart the Szabo, I've seen the internals in a video. Ever heard the advice "never take your pistol apart"? That. Plus, I want the warranty if I ever *actually* need it, like if the lock breaks or something (presumably after I nuked it, this thing is tougher than a prizefighter.)

That's not what the boilerplate says.

Spyderco’s warranty
does not cover damage caused by abuse, misuse, loss, improper handling, alterations, accident, neglect, disassembly, or improper sharpening.

So a loose pin is different and prior to taking it apart.

If you strip threads, lose screws, pry apart stuff not meant to be pried open, grind, saw, cut, drill, remove metal or other destructive measures while you dismantle the knife the warranty will not cover that kind of damage.

somehow i knew no matter how i wrote that fair warning id get this.^ im going to stop now as ive fought this battle before too many times already over the years. do whatever y'all want.

FWIW, neither copy I have makes any sound when closed, no matter how I shake them.

The Slysz Bowie has a similar stop pin. When the blade is open (tang against pin) it does not rattle, When closed (blade resting against pin) it does not rattle, but when half open it rattles.

If you're not adverse to taking it apart. A dab of thick grease or Vaseline in one or both of the holes for the pin will stop the rattle but still allow the pin to turn and distribute wear :)

Edit: Oh - just read that you are. Nvm
