Szabo Size

I've been trying to talk myself out of picking up a new Szabo. I think it's just too big. BUT ... I love the look of it , I love S30V , I love tbe compression lock , I love the cf , I love Tai Chung Spydies. So despite my logic and reason , which tell me this knife is too large to EDC , I just want it.

Does anyone carry this knife regularly ? How does it sit in your pocket ? Do you find it too awkward in size or is it not an issue for you ?

I had at one time found the BM 710 too big too carry but now I find it perfect in size for me to EDC. I'm hoping the same happens with the Szabo.

I have a Szabo but hardly carry it. I tried foray be two days and for me and the pants/shorts I wear it wasn't comfortable. The clip couldn't get all.the way clipped and left a lot of knife showing.

I bought mine more for the novelty and LSCF handles, I don't carry it at all but I snapped a quick pic next to other big Spydies to give you a sense of how big this guy really is.

I carry mine regularly with no issues, but I'm also about 6'3" and 285. It's roughly the same size as a Fox Deimos or Emerson Super CQC-8 and I pocket both of those comfortably as well.

I got a Black Szabo for Christmas and sold it not too long after. It was just too big for me; it's nearly a foot long when open.

Since I've started EDC'ing a Griptilian, I don't really see a point in anything else, except a paramilitary. I was like you not too long ago, wanting all those gorgeous Spyderco's and what not. Then after carrying the Szabo and Civilian for a few days, I realized that they are truly specialized knives, really just meant for collection or police. You will feel absurd performing mundane tasks with the Szabo because like the Civilian, it was made for killing people.

The handle is a little blocky and the overall ergonomics don't work great for me (the first swell in the handle lines up exactly with the opening hole and blocks access to it). The self-closing system feels clunky and obtrusive.

I thought I'd really like the knife - I like big folders, I like compression locks, etc - but I find myself never carrying it.

I don't own one, but I have held one and put in my pocket (not to steal, to see if it would fit). It is big, and it is heavy, but not prohibitively so. I think my opinion is a bit skewed since I carry a gun everyday, but I could see it as an EDC if you like a big solid knife. I mean, some people EDC ZTs that weigh half a pound or more with no issues so as long as you are OK with the size and weight than I don't see why not.

I agree with Tiguy above, it's not really that big and I've had no trouble carrying mine. I also find carrying my CS large Espada, Recon 1 XL, and Talwar XL ,all with 5.5" blades, to be problem free.
Back to Spyderco; I'm looking forward to packing the Tatanka when it's released, which seems to be significantly bigger than the Szabo. I foresee no hassles.

It's a big knife. It you have very large hands then maybe it could work. I thought it was too big to carry. My biggest problem was the opening and closing stiffness. It was my slowest to deploy Spyderco and yet it's made for self-defense?

Everyone is different.
For me, the Kris opens easily, quickly and smoothly every time.
For my father, the hole placement is such that it just doesn't work well with his hand mechanics.
He loves the Kris that I gave him as a present, but he has to pay attention to opening it.
The Native 5, on the other hand, works for him like Sal designed it with his hand in mind. :)

The same Szabo that opens slowly for you might open in a flash for someone else.
Just one more reason why it's good there's such a variety of knives out there.

Have you considered a Vallotton?

Mine wasn't too slow out of the box. Of course, then I sent it to Charlie Mike and got it waved. I'd say it's pretty darn quick, now.

I have the all black model.
It' stiff to open, a d if you dl a search, it's a common complaint. Also, the hole has quite sharp borders or edges, it's hard on the skin of the thumb.

On the good side, it's beatiful, has great quality materials, and great handle ergos.

I would say that it's a cs Spartan or a Espada, but fancier and more expensive materials and design.
If people can carry a large espada o a spartan, the szabo occupies less space in the pocket.

I like to own it and carry it just for the heck of it. I carry a multitool and a smal fixed blade for edc, and the szabo for plain badassery.

The Vallatton doesn't really do it for me.

The Szabo is just too awesome for me to pass up. I must have it.

I have also been smitten by another Spydie recently. Looks like it's going to be an expensive weekend.

The Szabo is an impressive looking knife. The grind on that blade looks wicked sharp!

I have been carrying mine for about three weeks without issue. It is slower to deploy than other spydies, but I can't get over with how sexy it is. If you are looking for all out speed of deployment a Yo 2 might be a better choice and be slightly more practical for every day uses.

The Yo2 is a favorite of mine. I'm looking to pick up another one but they have been out of stock everywhere for some time.
