Needless to say, I’m a fan.

I often wonder about knife design details. Recently, it occurred to me, that the most important purpose of the Szabo’s “self-close mechanism” is that the knife can never be mistaken for a “gravity knife”. I for one can not open the knife with the wrist only. Can you ?

What do you think ?

Roland.

Mine can't be flung open but that's because the pivot came very tight. It won't drop shut either, but I can hold it in a pinch grip and the heavy handle will swing down. Which I believe police sometimes do if they're hassling you about such matters.

The detent on mine was somehow removed by the previous owner. I can fling it out quite easily without even putting my thumb on the hole. I like it but the detent is just about non existent so I have to carry it tip up with the blade firmly against the back of my front pocket.

Can't wrist flick mine open either but it's not a knife that I'd carry anyway.

Because of a flood of medical expenses I've had in the past two years I haven't been able to snag a Spyderco SZABO folder. But I do want one in the worst way for my EDC rotation. It reminds me so much of my all time favorite Spyderco model and that being the C-60 Massad Ayoob model folder. The overall blade design of the SZABO folder is very similar in scope and the blade geometry is very much like the C-60 Ayoob model. Also for years I've been an admirer of the works of Laci Szabo and not only his knives but his other tools as well. Even the hatchet/ax he did with Spyderco is not only tactical but is also very practical as well. The UUK Lightning model that SZABO designed some time back has intrigued me for quite some time. It would be interesting to see what Spyderco would do with that fixed blade SZABO model.

I'd say if you really like the blade shape look for a Szabofly.

The regular folder is pretty much a 2 hand opener. It's really an evolution behind what you can find these days.

I have both the Ayoob and the Szabo and, while the blade design is similar, the Szabo is far bigger than the Ayoob and is not something I think that most people would care to use as an EDC; certainly not me.

BTW, I also have the Gunting, Lapu Lapu Corto (a later variant of the Gunting) and the Jot Singh Khalsa which also have similar blade designs; albeit smaller and w/different proportions. IMO, the Corto is the best of the bunch to use and carry as a SD knife based on its particular size and design characteristics.

The Szabofly is illegal to carry where I live, and probably in many other states as well.

My point was that the Szabo can not be gravity-opened even by the most dexterious LEO. :)

BTW, it's easy to one-hand "thumb-open" for me.

I can one hand open mine too but If I compare it to something like the Ayoob or the YoJimbo it's not very intuitive to open.

It's an amazing knife and the scales are some of the nicest I've seen but it's in a weird evolutionary branch that seems to have petered out.
