So, I just bought a 154CM Szabofly to match with a VG10 Szobofly which completes the pair but I discovered a peculiarity in the method of the clip attachment which differs between the two.
As you can see from the pics, the VG10 clip is attached with double headed screw set but the 154CM is only attached with a single screw, which looks like the type of male headed screw you'd find on any other knife that Spyderco makes that uses a wire clip, without a retaining female backing . . .
This male headed is also the same as the one used on the Spyderfly but the Spyderfly uses a highly machined 2 piece clip screw set.
The female part of the Spyderfly screw set is machined with an flat spot that matches a similarly machined flat spot in the handle to prevent the screw set from twisting upon tightening and so that the bottom of the female half lies flat with the handle.
Nothing that sophisticated can be found on either version of the Szabofly.
Upon closer inspection, you'll also note that there is some red thread locker residue on the bottom of the male headed screw on the 154CM Szabofly . . .
------------------------------------------
This is NOT just a one-off problem because I looked at EVERY Szabofly that ever has been sold & pictured on ACK in the past 10 years and the difference is consistent.
All of the clips on ALL of the VG10 Szaboflys use a 2 headed screw set to attach the clip but there is only 1 screw w/o a backing attaching the clips on any of the 154CM Szaboflys.
The thing is, while the hole in the handle of current Spyderco models that use the single screw method of wire clip attachment is THREADED, the hole in the 154CM Szabofly is NOT threaded, which means the red thread locker is the only thing holding the male headed clip screw in place on the 154CM Szaboflys.
WTF???
------------------------------------------
So, can Sal or anyone else explain why Spyderco would use a superior method of clip attachment on the earlier VG10 Szabofly but resort to an inferior & apparently McGiver-like method of clip attachment on the later 154CM Szabofly?
Did they run out of the 2 headed clip screw sets after the 1st run of VG10s & just had to "make do" with the 154CMs?
Inquiring minds would like to know . . .
