After trying several production made hatchets for my backpack I asked Joe Szilaski if he could put something together that was around 14" and would hold an edge. I did't want anything fancy, just a good cutter that would fit in/on my backpack. He had this for me at the Blade Show in Atlanta. The head is forged 52100 and the haft is hickory. I figured I better get some photos of it now because it isn't going to look this good again. I'll have some pics of the piece being constructed and will post 'em here.

Very nice piece Greg, he's certainly one of the best, can't go wrong with 52100.

That's a beauty for sure. Is the head blued? Looks like a two tone thing going on

Looks like a great backpack axe. My knees are getting too old for much backpacking, but I am always looking and dreaming. Reality is that you can not do some things as you get older that you loved when you were younger. An old Plumb was my go to hand axe in days gone by. I think you got what you were looking for.

Joe is one of the top tier axe and hawk makers in the business today..His hawks are the stuff that we all aspire too..I encourage anyone to look at his work..If you havent your missing out..I cant overstate his wortk,Its really that good..

Yes, the head is blued. I haven't had a chance to work it yet 'cause I'm getting pics of it before I do. It will never look the same once I start using it. I'm not really happy with the image I already posted so i am putting together another. I'll be going out in the hills when the rain lets up and will be using it then. Until then it has a breathing spell.

To some eyes they look even prettier when they're well used.

I agree. It's that first few days of use they look thrashed but after that it gets better.
