I would like to start some enthusiasm for the T.O.A.D lock design from Grant and Gavin Hawk. If it needs explaining check this out: http://hawkknifedesigns.com/TOAD.html

I know the R.A.M. is just weeks/days (hoping) away, but i think Kershaw can't ignore the impact these two gentlemen are making on the way we think about knives. I took apart my TiZDP Mini Cyclone the other week and was expecting something complicated, but in truth there was something like 12 parts, screws included; i was surprised. That is not to say that simplicity is bad, and as such, i tend to think of simple knives as elegant (like an elegant solution to a math problem).

The Hawks however, have seemed to turn this theory on their head in search of "a better way." I would Like to applaud their sheer tenacity for ingenuity and over engineering (but isn't it better to be over engineered rather than under engineered?) Thomas mentioned (granted back in 2005) that not a single E.T. had come back for warranty work, it was that well designed. and with the R.A.M. being an adaptation of the Hawk's D.O.G. system, i would like to see some support for the T.O.A.D. lock being next on the list for a production consideration.

What say you?

There's a "cool" gadget factor to overly complicated mechinisms but in something like a blade lock simple=less parts=less things to fail=less chance of failure.

No Toad, sorry.

The Ram, an Auto, and a fixed blade called the Sidewinder are on tap for 08.

simple is cool, complicated can be cool too ;)... one intreresting note on the RAM is that I've counted 11 or 12 individual parts on just the custom RAMs roller clip (pictured). Kershaw opted for a simple clip, which just MIGHT have helped keep the costs down.

I believe the TOAD was done by CRKT some time back... it's an older Hawk design.

Anyway... here's my RAM (again, sorry) ;) but it might get you excited about the production version which I've had the pleasure to handle... and it kicks butt!

I remember Blackie Collins making a Sidewinder, but it was an Auto.
Out of production now.
Is the name Sidewinder Kershaw's name for their fixed blade or the Hawks' ?

I swear ya'll have Grant and Gavin chained up over there with a big fire and a couple of hammers. :D

Here is a vid of some lucky )#@$($* that has a R.A.M., showing how to open it.

That is so FAST!

thanks for the info thomas.....i guess its a good thing no one else but me thought it would be a neat idea.

Time for some honesty:

I thought the RAM was a pretty ugly knife, with questionable ergonomics. But after seeing that video in post #6, I have to admit: I WAS WRONG!!! If the Kershaw R.A.M. opens that easily and looks that cool, I might have to try one out. Thanks 2brothers!

it's also very easy, and fun to close... you can do it one handed almost as fast as it opens (with some practice)

I'm like Jeremy, when I first saw the ZT0500, I said NO WAY was I going to buy it. Now that I have it I can't wait to get a second one! That flimsey side lock on the ZT0500 (what I thought) is backed up by some serious steel and locks the knife up as tight as a vault. Now I can't wait for the RAM!:D

You just have to keep rubbing it in don't ya. :grumpy: ;)

I want a RAM......like NOW!!!

Is it still looking like the end of the month before they're ready Coach??

Do you have any glimmer of info in this blade that you can give out yet? I have only ever seen that K-AT fixed blade and the later CRKT versions of it, and I am not aware of any other fixed blade Hawk designs.

Do you know where in a price range this will fall? eg over $200, $100 or less or.... I've not owned a fixed blade Kershaw yet, color me interested!

No it was a neat idea, but as oe mentioned, the TOAD has been done.

the D.O.G. was the folder made by CRKT

Actually the T.O.A.D. is one of our only designs that wasn't made by a factory. The Toad is a very complicated design, that required way too much time and precision to assemble. We showed the Toad around to several companies and after showing it around we realized it was just too complicated. After some thought my dad and i decided to design a knife that was like a Toad but was easier to make, and that design was the E.T. :)

yeah right, I suppose we're all supposed to believe you just because you are the maker???? (just kidding). I stand corrected. And by the way, I carry my custom RAM every day. What a knife!

dblagent, not ready to unveil any real details about the piece today. I will say it is all Hawk in it's appearance. Don't believe the Hawks ever made a custom version.
MSRP will be under $100. We will look to show it off at this years Blade Show.
