Hey all,

Does anyone have any experience with T.O.P.S. knives?? i was thinking of picking one up, preferably the Wolf Pup and maybe the baghdad box cutter.

Whats the pros and cons you've got with them and the wolf pup?

Is the sheath ambi-friendly? because i am lefty and would most likely wear it inside the pants on the left front side, unless i wear it on duty then it would be on my non-gun side (inside right and used as a last ditch)

Thanks to all in advance,

Eycee

In my experience, their knives are solid strongly built users, but maybe a tad overpriced.

I am a southpaw also, and all of the TOPS I have had, came with right hand only kydex sheaths, that quite frankly were not very well made. They had a metal clip that held them on your belt, and were very thin kydex and if inverted at all, my larger TOPS would fall out pretty easily.

If I were to go somewhere that a knife like that was needed, I wouldn't really hesitate to have a TOPS knife, just would get a little better sheath.

yeh they seem like strong knives, i was thinking of maybe making my own sheath for it or having one made. Which model tops did you use??

thanks for the input.

TOPS knives are very well made knives with a great heat treat. I have both knives you have listed, the box cutter is a sweet little knife and you can switch the clip for left hand carry, but is very thick and not that great of a cutter unless reprofiled. The wolf pup has a fixed clip for right hand carry only, the stock is thinner making it a much better cutter plus the handle is more ergonomic. I like both knives but I think the Felony stop may be a better choice for what you want . http://www.topsknives.com/product_info.php?products_id=249

The pro's- a really strong knife that you could bet you life on

The con's- the sheath's have very little retension to hold the knife in, so a custom sheath would be the way to go. The handle of the box cutter sucks unless you wrap it in para cord. The wolf pup doesn't have the handle problem but because of the way the blade is ground its very easy to cut you index finger when pulling it from the sheath.

I have the Wolf Pup. Sturdy little blade. You might want to give a second thought to the geometry though. Since the blade is very wide at the base and the knife is short, the cutting edge curves upward quite aggressively. If does call for the right cutting technique otherwise you'll find it slipping off from everything. The black blade coating is not smooth at all and the blade is thick, thus the Pup is very strong but would make a poor slicer.

The handle is thick. This is good because the grip is much better than you'd expect from such a small knife (and it can be improved further by attaching a Reeve style lanyard). On the other hand, I think you could find better alternatives for a last-resort semi-concealed carry knife since the Pup is a quite substantial little knife.

I've got 2 TOPS knives. The Rangers Edge and the Armageddon. Nice knives. The sheath on the Rangers Edge is not very good. The sheath for the Armageddon is very nice!

I had a Firestrike.

Knife itself was solid as a rock, just didn't seem to "fit" my personal tastes after I had it awhile, but quality was 100%.

Thanks for the quick response guys!!:D

Just curious on some things....

Is'nt the clip for the box cutter sheath only a carbiner?? i wouldnt want to wear in just hanging like that.

If you had to choose the better of the 2, box cutter or wolf pup which would you choose and why??

The wolf pup cuts your finger on the way out??

If you want to forget about the knife during the day and only use it as a last resort, don't buy the Wolf Pup. In every other respect it is a fine little blade. So far I have not cut any fingers when unsheathing it. Could be related to the lanyard improved grip?

i was also looking at the Boker Subcom fixed blade, seems like i may be able to affix a clip to it.

i really liking both the boker subcom and the wolf pup now lol:D. Any help with either??

No experience with that :(
However, the Boker Subcom folder series is also nice and all the little fellas come with a clip already :) The Subclaw is particularly recommended by some as a usable last resort SD tool.

Of course the TOPS fixed blades will be infinitely safer and reliable solely because they are fixed blades. I think you need to make up your mind and make a trade-off between ease of carry vs. ultimate reliability. Happy searching! :)

yeh i was looking at those but the clips are only for right handed carry, im lefty so that kind of rules me out for those haha.

I think i've come to the conclusion i am just going to get both the Boker Subcom and the Wolf Pup and see what i can do with both in the ways of making it more lefty accessible to me as well and the concealibility and reliability of both. I figure i wont know until i personally try them. Even if it means making/modifing a sheath of getting one made for me.

So either they will work and i will keep them or they wont and maybe ill get rid of them haha.

Thanks again to all for your input, it is greatly appreciated!!

I have a Police Interceptor and agree with the above posts. Great quality, so so sheath. The fit and finish of the knife is beautiful.

+1. I had a TOPS Tracker Scout. Well built and I liked the ergos of the handle. The price of the Scout was reasonable but many of the TOPS I've seen (mostly 6"+ blades, 1095) are overpriced imo.

The Boker Subcom FB is a GREAT knife. Not sure why you want a clip. They make a Subcom folder too. I have both the Subcom FB and folder and the Trance (my current EDC) and they are all a great bang for the buck. You might want to check out the Boker MPT too http://www.boker.de/us/index.php?c=45,2,&a=02BO591&p=&pp=0

ps I'm a biased member of Boker and Chad Los Banos. Since I don't have a lot of disposable income, great bang for buck knives are my thing.

The box cutter has a metal spring clip that is reversable but I think a small tek-lok would work better. If I had to chose between the two I would chose the wolf pup because of the thinner blade and better handle.

If you not careful, because of its small size your index finger can be at risk of being cut but thats only until you get use to how to grab it from the sheath.

The boker fixed blade you are looking at is quite large compared to the others, I don't own one but the one I looked at, at the store had a very uncomfortable handle and was so tight in the sheath it took two hands and a foot to get it out (which can be very dangerous).

Did you take a look at the Ka-Bar TDI knives? They were designed specifically for what you are looking to do with it.
