Hey guys, tried something pretty wild the past couple of days. I looked through an old tsukamaki book, and found a wrap style (Naka Biku Maki) that was simple, and different than anything I've seen. This is my version of this style. The cord I had dyed turned a puke green, and I just couldn't help but think of zombies while working with it. I just went with a Zombie theme with this one. The intention with the blade was to make it appear to be decayed and diseased. I used white vinegar and yellow mustard for this effect.

The blade is chisel ground, and sharp as a razorblade. I'm currently making a kydex sheath for this one. Steel is 1/8 thick 1095 from Aldo. Peters Heat treat 60rc.

Any comments and criticisms certainly welcome!

I think the virus theme fits very well. The wrap is simple and the color does have a zombie look to it. The part that really ties in the T-Virus for me is the patina. Without reading first and just looking at the picture it immediately made me think of blood cells or a virus under a microscope. The way some show a pattern inside them and some are connected looks like cells that are reproducing or mutating.

criticism - No guard, if its a SD type I believe it should have a guard. but thats just opinion. If you do stick a zombie you don't want your hand sliding up on the blade, possibly affecing you.

Pros - nice knife simple and functional.

Oh man that is awesome! I never really thought about it that way. Damn!

I never really could fit a guard into any of my Japanese designs. The handle is super grippy, and I put my confidence in that it's not gonna move too much in the hand. A turks head would be nice, but I suck at them....lol.

I think it is perfect as is. I think the grind, blade finish, and cord wrap fit together very well. IMHO, this would be awesome as a neck knife.
Beautiful work.

I just wanted it to look like smallpox, or some kind of lesions....like zombie flesh.

I should have kept my mouth shut and said YEAH MAN. CELLS. THATS WHAT I WAS TOTALLY GOING FOR!

Nope. That is an excellent ovservation, and on any future knives I will certainly give credit for that great idea/imagination.
