Taal Volcano, Philippines-Bucket List Cont.

Taal Volcano, Philippines

So about 1 ½ years ago I made a so called “Bucket List,” like in the movie. Peruvian Jungle (Rainforest), Australia, and hike a volcano. I got the itch while in Italy and hiked up Mt. Vesuvius, the mountain that wiped out Pompeii. To my disappointment it was very reminiscent of my first trip to the Grand Canyon, nothing but white clouds and rain. There was no visual of the crater or the mountain. It basically looked like a cliff up in the clouds. So after much thought (a couple of weeks) I decided to go and see this volcano I have heard about for a year, Taal Volcano in Tagaytay, Philippines.

Besides, I was on my way to New Zealand so I thought, why not take a detour? After about 20 hours of travel I arrived in Manila and met a couple of friends I have met on a prior trip to Europe.

Traveling the streets in Manila is easy to describe, synchronized chaos! Busses, taxis, tricycles (which are just bicycles pulling a buggy), and what they called ships. It was crazier than Hong Kong, Mexico, Naples (Italy), and Peru. It truly is a must see and I think should be a “man-made wonder of the world!” After a 2 hour van ride we reached the lake where we caught a river boat and traveled to the village where we would hike to the top. Most people hire a horse to get up the rocky, muddy, steep dirty trail but I didn’t go there to ride an ass!

It looked like rain and in the Philippines it could easily mean a Typhoon like they have been having. So despite grey skies and the unavoidable haze, here is Taal Volcano!

The locals came to see the new shipment, sell water and try to rent us horses to get to the top like most normal people

Once we got there the trail was all mud and slush

Along the way

It must have been, bring your horse to the basketball game day!

Hey bear, welcome to my homeland! There are so many amazing places in the Philippines. On a rate of 1 to 10, I would rate Taal only 3 or maybe 4. You should visit Palawan or the Banawe Rice Terraces. Hope you had a great time there! And you are right about Manila, very chaotic but fun!

Although there's another one in Mexico also claiming to be the "World's Smallest Volcano", honestly, you can't beat Taal's view because of its location within the lake.

ROFL! So true! :D

BTW, for the bali-lovers as well as other blades, the famed Barangay (county) Balisong is located in the area, before you actually cross the lake to the volcano.

I have plans to return and I will. Rice Terraces was on my list but time...not enough!

They say it is the worlds smallest but I don't know?

Great pics, RB. I look forward to every post you make to see where you have been lately. Can you tell me a bit about your camera? They look like great pics from a small camera, if it's the one in the case around your neck.

Keep the pics coming!

Thanks! The camera is simple-Canon G-10. Mostly used in Manual mode.

Awesome pics bro. You are living the life, I admire the hell out of you for getting after it like you do. That pic of the old lady certainly does tell a story.

Thanks for looking, I always like to let you guys see the pictures first. I will post some New Zealand/Australia pics in the next few weeks!

My wife is from Dagupan, which is not terribly far from Banaue, so we went there last Christmas

Another nice place to visit in that area is Hundred Islands National Park

But make sure you visit around New Year, they really know how to have fun then. Just look at how happy my son was, anticipatiing the coming festivities:

And the only way to describe the traffic there is total complete and absolute chaos. But the drivers are good, and I never saw a single accident in the cities (and only one on a mountain highway, coming down from Baguio).

Nice pictures Reuben. You guys should visit Cebu. I was born there but haven't been back since I left 27 years ago. I don't remember much but I hear it's really nice to visit..

I will never get tired of reading and seeing pics of your adventures bro!

Thanks for sharing.
