Quick question to those in the know...I have an old belt driven tables saw that is fast approaching the end of its' usefulness as a saw. Can I mount a cutoff wheel in it and use it as a profile cutter. RPM is 1725 and the table (itself) is in fair condition. I hate the idea of throwing any tool away because the week after I do, I desperately need it or something just like it!!

I appreciate your input.

yes of course...just make SURE you get all the sawdust out first!!!!!! if you get a real thick stiff cuttoff blade you can do a lot...thats what the profile knife grinders use to make cutters for big shaper heads in the wood working industry.....

I have used a old worn out table saw with a cutoff blade for many years. I got the right size bushing for the shaft, and attached a abrasive cutoff blade that had been worn down to about the right size. I then lowered the blade so it was below the saw table. I then made a solid aluminum drop plate and attached it to the saw table. Then I turned the saw on, and raised the blade up and let it cut its way through the solid drop plate. It works great, and is a good way to use up abrasive saw blades when they get too small for the cutoff saw.
I use mine to slot guards, and have cut all sorts of metal on it.
It really does throw sparks, so watch what is under the saw. I made a sheet metal guard under the saw to catch the sparks.

Cutoff saw blade??? Shoot, when I first started knifemaking I bolted a grinding rock to an old craftsman(excuse the cussing) table saw. Did some pretty good hollow grinding on it too.
