I am computer illiterate.

We have a Windows 8 based tablet with a virus. The Internet Explorer web page is stuck on "please call this 888 phone number to get rid of this virus".
Can someone that knows more than I do help me fix this issue.

Thank you.

Rootkit Sirefef Spy and Trojan Virus found in system32 NT Kernel
If that helps

Some searching online doesn't show it to be a cryptolocker type virus. You'll have to start things in safe mode to run a cleaner, not sure how that works with a tablet. Don't trust any eradication sites online unless you are familiar with them. I have used the malwarebytes.org site and bleepingcomputer.com with good success.

I have been wrangling viruses for a long time. glennbad's suggestions are very good. I've used both programs successfully. Try downloading them to another windows device and load them onto a usb drive to transfer them to your tablet. After doing so connect the usb drive to another windows device and scan it for viruses and other malware. Reboot tablet to safe mode, disconnect from the internet. Install and run Malwarebytes. Note the result and proceed from there. Majorgeeks is a great source of advice and software. Also look at installing Bitdefender Antivirus. There are a lot of software tools to use. Let me know how you fare.

I just downloaded the malwarebytes.org and AVAST.
HOW DO I GET SAFE MODE ON A TABLET?

It popped up "blocked" 3-4 times and went away. I think that worked.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!!

So far all I've done is used the free Malwarebytes and free a avast and if worked. I owe. You two. :D

GADGETS & GEAR! You should all know better.

Now that its clear, check that auto-updates are on, as annoying as they are, microsoft is pretty good at plugging holes, and it at least narrows down the threats that can hit you.
