Ok. I was lucky enough to have a friends HOGSJTAC to compare with my HOGSJTAC LE. I hope these pictures help explain the difference between magnum and standard slabs on the TAC handled knives. Beauty of these shots is the steel is the same thickness... Hope this clears things up for people... (sorry for what might be near redundant shots, some of the angles are VERY slightly different) And this is also a good opportunity to contrast the Tigerstripe/Tigerhide to the Snakeskin which has also been a considerable source of confusion...

The "magnum" handles on the BA-III are more contoured than these tiger stripe handles.

I'd call it "apples and oranges" really.

.

Looks like the difference to me is only about 1 layer of micarta. I hope the Mag handles on the BATac are much thicker. I dont think the handles SJTac LEs were marketed at Mags.

Ahha! I get it. Thanks so much for taking the time to do this Dunner.

SOOO, it can be deduced that this is a TAC handle thing, and that the magnums on the CG BATac's will be like the tigers in these pics?

I poked around that wayback machine link (thanks gimmejr). Magnums weren't offered on the CG SJ's like they are on these BA's. The only thing I'm still wondering is if there's any kind of palm swell. Probably not based on what Dunner's brought forward, right? Probably just thicker.

There will be a palm swell.

They will NOT look like the tiger handles pictured at the top of this thread.

DavidE, are you sure about that? How do you know, cuz it sure looks the same in the pic on bussecomat.com.

I'm getting one of each anyways; I'll be happy with whichever. I'm just curious and trying to do some educated deductions.

Thanks Dunner!!
I've been wondering if there was a difference between those two!
Again, thanks for putting the time in to take the pics!

I was told by someone at Busse that they would not have a palm swell, only slightly wider. Very slightly.

I still ordered one with mags though.

Probably true if we were talking BAIIIs. Instead, I think the comp was for the BATAC and SJTAC - Both use the exact same tac handle and the difference between the two models would be as minimal as the Fusion grips of a FSH and a FBM. :D

No problem guys. The DCSSHOGSJTAC belongs to a friend and I don't think I could bring myself to sell that beauty even if it was mine ;). I am very confident that these standard and magnum slabs accurately represent what we will be getting on the BATAC.

And it's true that the SJTACLE was NOT marketed as having magnum handles but this is something Jerry pointed out later.

From the thread announcing the BATAC.

There is no difference in contour between the standard and the magnums. The difference is in the base thickness. The magnums will add approx. 1/8" - 3/16" to the overall thickness of the handle.

Hope this helps,

Jerry

Amy-O has cleared this matter up for me via the phone. She's got a Badger sitting on her desk. Dunners conclusions are correct. The handles will be the same for the Badgers as they were for the SJ's. Tigers and magnums are just thicker with no noticeable palm swell like we find on fusion handles. The pics Dunner has posted are accurate to what we can expect from the Badgers. That's right from the one who brings it herself.

Nice. Thanks for confirming Damn the Man. Amy and Kendra and the crew at Busse are awesome! I called one day recently and could hear them cracking up when Amy picked up the line. I jokingly asked if I had interrupted anything important and she explained they were just having fun at work and were competing on who could get to the phone first. Where else ON EARTH do you have people taking care of their customers and having a great time like that!?

Do you consider an opportunity to sell one of them?

Good luck, and welcome to the Busse forum!

Please forgive my ignorance - I'm not an INFIholic yet (have a BATACLE on order though), but the knives in the OP's pics don't look like the SJTACs to me (judging by the blade length), but rather like the 1" shorter BATACs. The blade/handle length ratio seems off - SJ is 6" blade and 11 3/4" OA, while the BA is 5" blade and 10 3/4 OA. The blade is measured from the tip to the plunge line, right? Someone please correct me... Thanks.

Regards,
Rok

Dude, trust me...they are SJTACS. You remember that kind of thing when you dish out $427. AND the fact that nobody owns a BATAC yet only increases my confidence in this.

The blades are pretty broad for the length so they may look shorter but are probably just more massive overall than you might presume. Blade length from Busse is measured from the micarta as is the law in many locals. The shot down the length is a low angle shot so they look shorter than they really are in that one. In any case...welcome to the forums! All this stuff will become more familiar over time :)

The question I still have is, are the BATACS blades going to be any broader than the SJTAC... That would be cool. I LOVE broad blades

You are going to very happy when you get your BATACLE! Should be a beast of a "small" knife... pun intended.
