tach problems, machined too well?

Ok, I seem to be noticing a problem with the tachyon handles. Everything on the tachyon is machined so well that it fits *just* so. Unfortunately, I occasionally drop the knife - this seems to put an ever so slight dent in the corner of the handle where the latch alley is.

So now, on a good rotation the latch will swing down and catch on that slight deformity. It'll stick there or slide open, pulling the top of the latch across the butt of the handle, leaving lots of scratches. Any suggestions?

I guess this is my one request for change on the tachyon, make the bottoms of the handle rounded instead of squared, it should not affect latch tightness, but it'll help with this problem...

Aside from the obivious of not dropping the Tachyon again, the best thing is to sand the "dimple" out.

Here's my suggestion: Take the Tachyon apart. Place a piece of emery cloth on a piece of glass that's resting on the tabletop, and sand the handle area until the dimple disappears. You'll still have that dented look, but at least the latch won't catch anymore.

As for rounding the end of the handle, it wouldn't matter as I suspect you'll probably still get the same dimple if you drop the Tachyon on that part of the handle.

Tony, thanks, I'll probably sand them down as you suggest. And I'll really, really try not to drop it again. :)

But, rounding the ends of the tachyon will provide some space so that the latch is not right up against the edge of the handle. So if it was dropped, even though you'd get a little deformation of the metal, it would be far enough away from the latch that it doesn't hit the latch as it is swinging. The problem now is that the machining is so tight the latch is right squared up against the bottom of the handle non-latched handle that there isn't any room for the dimple. shrug

If the Tachyon dings that easily, I'm definitely not getting one. I've dropped my 42, dunno how many times and the thing comes out unscathed. I'm down for the no-scratchy knives...how 'bout you?

nybble, I know exactly what you mean regarding the tight tolerances of the Tachyon. As I first found out how tight it was when I tried to do latch drops with my prototype. Because it was engineered and machined so tightly, any deviation from a true straight swing of the free handle would cause the latch to bind, and ruin the latch drop. I guess that the somewhat available slack from a BM made me sloppy, and I had to once again concentrate on proper execution.

I suppose rounding off the edge would give some gap buffer to allow the handles to deform and not affect the latch, but with the upcoming increase in price, another extra labor step would not help in maintaining the unit cost. Guess the best thing is still to not drop it in the first place. Not a hard proposition considering just how grippy those Titanium handle slabs are compared to the smooth steel handles of the Monarch or the BM customs. ;)

I get the dings in the latch channel too. It's from manipulating and the latch hitting the corners of it. I used a diamond file and took them down.

I dropped a Balisong once in 1971..., but nothing at all happened! :)

hahahaha!! bet you didn't see that coming, did ya! :p
btw, if you don't have a cabin, you can rent ours. but then again, you have no girl either... ;)

Titanium, although extremely strong, is somewhat soft and will show a bit of wear. I call the character marks :)

Mine is showing minor wear from the latch and slight scratching but I have put it through hell.

I too have had to relearn my latch drop technique. If anything it has made me even better (not that I was good to begin with :) )
