Taco or pancake?

I've never had a kydex sheath before, but think I would like one for my BK14. I've only had the knife a short while, and have been belt carrying it with the TDI clip and stock sheath. Stock sheath is OK, but I would like a smaller overall package, and possibly better knife retention (not planning on hanging upside down, but would like to eliminate the small amount of "rattle" the stock sheath has).

I contacted Azwelke via email, because I would like to keep the TDI clip (I like it, possibly there are better options), and they indicated to just let them know when I order that I would like it setup for the clip.

Is there an opinion that a "pancake" style is any better/worse than a "taco" style kydex sheath for discreet belt carry? I would like the smallest overall package I can get, but also want ease of use and stability.

This could be a dumb question, but I have no experience with kydex to even know if one style or the other really matters.

Thanks for any input.

Taco will be smaller and lighter than a pancake, but a pancake will give you more mounting options due to having attachment points on both side of the sheath instead of just one side like a taco sheath.

Smallest package you can get and i still can put my bk14 as a piggyback.the belt loop can be placed both way(up or side).i like the taco best for the same reasons as you but agree that the pancake as more attachements option.

I prefer the taco sheaths as well. Especially for something the size of the BK14, it's nice to keep it more compact. You can still mount a TDI or Tek-Lok on them with 2-screws, so belt carrying is possible.

This is exactly right. Taco sheaths are smaller and lighter, but pancakes have more mounting options. Also more lashing/paracord stash options.

You mentioned wanting something for "discrete belt carry" and you would like the smallest overall package you can get, but also want ease of use and stability. Your desires point toward the taco. Taco sheaths are the smallest you can get, they are discrete, easy to use, and they are stable. Go for the taco - tacos are good! ...and almost always cheaper! (the sheaths and the food)

I'm a fan of the taco for a more minimalist carry. I dig, it works, retention is great.

I carry a taco w/ a mini-tech-lock fastened with 2 or 4 bolts almost every day. Nice and secure.

I really appreciate the replies. My only concern about the taco at this point is how secure the TDI clip will be. I see someone mentioned it would only be attached via 2 screws, which makes sense with the smaller profile. Does anyone use a taco with a TDI clip?

obvious answer is tacos made from pancakes.

Unless this isn't about food. I prefer pancake because it seems more secure to me. I don't have any azwelke sheaths I have 2 Godspeed tacos (Esee-LS&3) that mount together that ride very nicely.

Pancake all the way for me. Much more flexible in terms of carry. Can easily carry on my belt and then attach it to a molle pack, Very versatile in my opinion.

Not a TDI clip, but if it doesn't work out you could always rig up something else that would work.

Hey mocraig,2 screws is sturdy enough even with the weight of the 7.

I just made waffles for breakfast... But tacos can be for breakfast, lunch or dinner...

I do have an Azwelke pancake style for my BK5, and also have a pancake BK9 and taco BK14/24 on order with him. I think the pancake gives you more security to bolt on Tek-Lok or a dangler, plus room to attach a fire steel or a smaller sheath as a piggyback. In fact, Al is setting up the 14/24 sheath as a piggyback for the 9. As MRN8 said, the taco style is more compact, and so I believe it's the better choice for smaller knives, and the pancake is a better choice for the larger ones.

I really like the taco. Low profile and you have some great carry options. Normally I carry on my belt with a strap, but that can be removed (or not) and slipped into a pocket.
