Hello All,
We (Guro Allain Atienza, Guro Leo Manalo, Guro Diane Atienza and Seth) just came back from Tactical Awareness down in MD. I have been teaching Atienza Kali Punyal at Tactical Awareness for the last 3 weeks but never got a chance to get involved with what happens during the camp. This weekend I was the student and not the teacher. I was amazing to see the methods Mike Jaco and Ralph Panaro use to tap the development warrior spirit.
Guro Allain and I were blind folded and placed in a field standing 40 yards apart. The exercise was to see who could find and shoot the other first. We were only allowed to shoot off 1 round every 10 seconds. This exercise was a demo in how the normal 5 senses are not used and the spirit consciousness (third eye, sixth sense) is put into play. In Atienza Kali this development of this spirit consciousness is done through the actually training of the blade and through certain blade meditations. It was nice to see that we could apply what we learned since in a different exercise. You try to use your hearing at first and realize that its like trying to find a needle in a crowd of people. Then you put yourself in a super relaxed state (Atienza Kali Warrior Calm), get rid of all thought and expand yourself out to find the other person. This was an awesome experience. The evolution ended with Guro Allain taking a paintball in the abdomen from 20 yards away. You have to see the video clip.
The next evolution was the Drum Stock exercise. About forty attendees were placed in a field about 150 yards opposite a drum. They were all blind folded and told to go to the drum by feeling the beat of the drum (that only was struck every 8 counts). I say feeling the beat because once again using the sense of hearing could deceive you because how sound can bounce around the surroundings. Participants swore that the drum was moving locations because of this echo. The drum never moved and people began to tap the spirit to feel the drum and more importantly the drummer to zero in on the location. To make it harder the drum and the participants were placed across a deep ditch that could be cross by a small dirt bridge. Everyone made it across.
One of the last evolutions was playing paintball capture the flag in the woods in the pitch black. I wasnt directly involved with that so I will let the rest of the guys talk about that.
These exercises are called evolutions because the instructors of Tactical Awareness help to train or evolve the warrior spirit in everyone. Everyone can develop his or her warrior spirit and Tactical Awareness helps to train that.
Everyone who attended this class were martial artists or military. They were all extremely impressed on how the course showed them that they could tap that warrior spirit that they thought they didnt have or that they thought they couldnt do. The best thing is that they do it through what the love already, the Warrior Arts.
The instructors are awesome people with backgrounds that more that qualify them for this kind of instruction. To see more on
