I've been searching the web for the last 45 minutes looking for some quality ripstop cargo pants, like Tad Gear has, but have had no luck. I'd buy the TAD pants, but I need a longer inseam.

Where do you guys get your heavy duty utilty pants from????

Thanks in advance,
MXDan

You can get actual khaki bdu's from a variety of sources for much less than the price of a pair of jeans. If you aren't going to get them, get the 5.11 pants. Either of them look a hell of a lot better than the "tactical" offerings out there from a variety of vendors.

I got the 5.11's in black and they are awesome. Very comfy, very rugged, huge useful pockets. I love them. :)

Ripstop....doesn't. Get holes poked in them, and burn easily, too.
I love cargo pants, but will take winter weight BDUs over any commercial offerings.
A couple of weeks ago, I finally got to check out the 5.11 pants, shirts, and vests, in person after reading so much about them.
I fail to see the appeal. They have a bunch of pockets...wow.
I know alot of people like them, but to me they're just more yuppie-wear.
If you just want tough pants, check out Carharrt and Dickie's heavyweight denim offerings. More durable than the canvas ones people make so much of, which wear alot quicker, especially the tool pockets.
Most of the stuff I see described as "heavy-duty" doesn't even come close. At least not to my way of thinking.
My work clothes get snagged on steel, rubbed on metal and concrete surfaces, have molten rock splattered on them, and metal handtools in and out of the pockets all the time.
I kind of doubt most people need clothes that will stand that kind of use. I wouldn't myself, but I don't care for the fire retardant pants that we are supplied, and buy my own.
You don't say what kind of environment/s you'll be using these in, but it made me wonder.
Do you want "heavy duty utility pants", or well-made casual wear?
There's a big difference.

Thanks for all the input thus far. I'm looking for pants that I don't have to worry about ripping or snagging if I go hiking, move through heavy brush, go on police ride-alongs, and such. I hopefully won't have molten rock spilled on them, but I want something that has nice big pockets and won't rip out like many blue jeans I've worn have. I think I might try a pair of the 5.11, as they have an inseam that might work (I'm 6'5"). Most BDUs I've seen aren't nearly long enough, even if they do offer a 'long' size.

Thanks again,
MXDan

Have you guy's ever tried out Proper BDU's? They run about $21.99 per pair. Very comfortable, and well made. Just do a google search for Proper BDU.

5.11s are good, but when the heck is RR going to get rid of the pleated fronts? Just a little behind... Yeah, I know, deal with it:p

I got a pair of thick cotton OD green and tan cargo pants from Old Navy for about $15 each on sale. The pockets are buttoned instead of Velcro'ed for easy field repair.

Either 5.11's, or propper BDU's. One of my local Army-Navy stores carries Propper. If I remember right, Propper is actually one of the main USG contractors for uniforms.

Hello. I used to be a fan of Propper BDU's, but found that the cotton ripstop fades easily and wears out quickly, while the poly/cotton ones(which I cannot find in ripstop) do not fade, but get a reddish-brown tinge to the overall heavy wear areas. The poly/cotton Proppers are pretty tough though.

Currently I am trying out a brand from Ranger Joe's that were supposed to be "SRT" brand, but when they arrived were "MOC" brand. The brand isn't the issue, but it was just a weird inconcistency. They are my long sought after poly/cotton RIPSTOP BDU's. I like 'em so far and the color seems to hold up well after one wash, and the length is absolutely PERFECT! The only downside is that they are made in CHINA.:( All in all I'm pretty happy with 'em and until I find this same fit, fade resistance, and poly/cotton blend, but made in the USA, I'm gonna stick with 'em. They were only $24 a piece too, which is nice 'cause I'm on a budget.:)

Two years ago I started wearing nothing but 511s. Got pants and shorts in every color. I JUST wore out my first pair of pants. I LOVE them. Pocket access is everything, that is where they smack BDUs.

I wear the 5.11 everyday, have done so for the past 2 years. Great pants and fit.

I also use the 5.11 vest, best thing since ice cream for concealed carry.

They're comfy, have a lot of pockets, last a long time and only set me back about $30 (for new ones) although one summer I lived in a pair of cut-off BDUs that I picked up for $6 at a thrift store. Not trying to be a mall ninja, just practical.
