I doubt you could go wrong with a Calypso Jr. lightweight, a military, or a BM 710. Those are all three good ones.

What size are you looking for? Price range?

For fixed blades, Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works has some great sharpened prybars for around 100 bucks. Of similar quality and price are TOPS knives. The Interceptor has been calling to me; it's about 3.5 inches and thick as hell. I figure I probably won't ever have to defend myself with a knife or cut fruit, so it'll make a good digger. Plus, it looks cool ;)

For folders, the Chinook has been singing the same siren song.

Given that list the first thing that comes to mind is the Spyderco Lightweight. It is relatively small, very light, and easy to conceal. The fiberglass reinforced nylon handle is not glamorous, but it is nearly indestructable and quite functional. 440V is at the absolute top end of blade steels (along with BG-42, D-2, and, maybe, VG-10). And you get all of that for around $50.

It's design is widely-acclaimed for usability. The grip fits most hands and the 3" blade is shaped to handle just about any task, including thrusting and slashing. It is even fully ambidextrous, which can be useful if your strong-side hand or pockets are being used for something else.

My second choices, taking a step upward in both size (4" blade) and price (just over $100), would be the Benchmade 710 or the newly-released Benchmade 806 AFCK Axis. Both are tough knives with high-quality 4" blades, what may be the best lock in the industry, and reputations for handling any job, including defense.

If you prefer a fixed blade, but still want concealment, look into neck knives. The best deal is probably the Camillus ArcLite in D-2 that is available through A.G. Russell (under $50). My personal favorite is the Microtech Medallion (around $80). These are both good general-purpose knives made from good steel. I think the Microtech is somewhat better suited to defensive use because of its lower guard.

If you want fixed blades, you cannot go wrong with Böker Mr Nealy Design. It comes in tanto or (drop?) point - I have the tanto version. The kydex sheath has some magnets in it, to keep the knife from falling out when you wear the sheath/knife combination upside down. You can also wear it as a neck knife, boot knife etc. There are reportedly 9 variations of carry in total.
There is also the CRKT Stiff Kiss, which I wear every day upside down, much like the Böker, but the Kiss has no magnets, since it depends on friction instead. You can cord-wrap the handle, giving you a pleasant hour or so, figuring out how to do it. :)
The Kiss also comes as a drop point version.

I can recommend them both. The Böker is of higher quality, but for a higher price.
I think the CRKT sells for $23 at http://www.knifecenter.com

One name for ya!
Emerson

Look into the P.U.K.(Police Utility Knife. Its a fixed blade) and the Commander (a folder.)

I dont own a P.U.K. but I do own a Commander, tough knife, treated it gently at first as it was so expensive (for me at least) but once I finally got to where I was comfortable ot really use it, its never failed me. Its a brute, but also a very finely made piece of tactical cutlery.
Should serve anyone well. Its a bit more expensive than other knives, but well worth it.

It has good materials, good quality of manufacture, and a good combat blade!

I would think, that coming from Emerson Knives Inc., the P.U.K. would also have these qualities.

Neither are terribly sheeple friendly, but I have two special fingers on each hand for the sheeple...I really dont care what they think. :p

Get yourself a Camillus Cuda CQB-1, or it's little brother, the CQB-2.:).

Second glockman's recommendation. Slim, flat, great handling qualities (canvas micarta), very usable blade design. The CQB2 is the only 4" bladed fixed blade I have that I can carry without attracting attention.

My suggestion for your needs would definitely be a fixed blade unless you can't wear your shirt tail untucked. If you can, I'd go with either the already mentioned camillus cqb-1 or one of these:

Livesay icu
Cold Steel culloden or kobun
Greco cub companion - on sale now!
Bob Dozier Arkansas Toothpick - would be perfect for your needs IMHO
Al Polkowski Polecat (anopther perfect one), Scorpion, or LOTS of others!
CRKT companion, if you want to go dirt cheap

or if you're in the mood to spend some money...

WALTER BREND ELIMINATOR DAGGER

That Brend is just one hell of a knife! Those are just some of my suggestions. Just explore your options and have fun looking. I think it would be in your best interest to go to a knife store if you have one in your area and handle as many different knives as you can.

Some things to look out for in a knife that will conceal and function well as a utility and defense knife are: conealability (duh!), ease of carry, ease of deployment, ease of sharpening, blade shape - you will want something well suited to utility and defense at the same time(watch out for radical tanto shapes, serrations, etc.), blade reflectivity - if you need something covert.

Good luck, and remember - the hunt is half the fun!

Seems like 4 inch fixed blade tacticals with natural handle materials may be the new trend. I know I make them now as well as people like Mike Williams, John Fitch, Joe Flournoy and JW Randall. These are getting to be hot little items with the bladesmith boys.
