Hello, I need a little help. I am looking for a Tactical Field Knives and I came accross the Cold Steel Black Bear Classic, and the OSS. I am looking at the OSS because of the price and my question is how good is the Black Bear and OSS. Also if anyone could recommend something else if there are better choices?

Look at the Buck Nighthawk line... I am sure you will find something that works for you there!!!! Good Luck and Welcome to Blade Forums!!!

There's a big difference between the Black Bear (VG1 lam steel) and OSS (420, or AUS8 for more $$). That price gap is going to close with the AUS8 blade.

If you're going to spend more than a couple hundred dollars, there's also the Fallkniven A2, which is more a Bowie design, and VG10 laminated steel. They call it a wilderness knife, but it would seem to fit well into this category. CS also makes the Recon Scout and the Natchez (another Bowie). If you want something specifically with a sub hilt, there are others out there. I really like the FK A2 and the CS Recon Scout.

Nice look at the OSS here:

Great Vid, thanks for the link Halbie. Also thank you for the greeting and info babakanoosh45. Question again, would the knife be ok on a regular belt instead of an LBE?

To me those CS knives looks like fancy bayonets. If you want a DAGGER to kill people, get a Sykes Fairbairn.

My suggestion would be to get a Fallkniven A1 or A2 if you want a big knife.
However a Fallkniven F1 or S1 might suit you better. They might not look combat enough but they really do the work.
If you are issued a bayonet I suggest using that for pry and destroy jobs and you keep the F1 or S1 for jobs where an edge is really important.

By the way, I would not buy a knife for 50 USD an think that I can trust it if I really need to. How useful is a knife if it is broken?

So forget the Cold Steel things and go for quality. Fallkniven F1, S1, (A1, A2, MC1), RC3, RC4, Bark River something. Any on these knives are really great for both military and civilian use. They look good both attached to a LBE or hanging from a belt while camping, although an MC1 might be a bit too much on a family trip :)

thanks for your reply, I am checking out the Fallkniven blades and they are good looking, will definitly be looking at them.
