OK I recently picked up a knife from a forum member that while it had a nice
knife in it..... was just not finished by the Kami.

Butt cap gouged your hand.... Dull blunt edge. had a couple of pits on the blade. There was something about the shine....I don't know just not right.
The blade felt tacky and cheap.... Unfinshed...not animated yet.

So I hand rubbed and etched the blade gave it a wicked edge. Matt finished the handle and fit the freaking butt cap so the handle did not feel like you were grabing razor blades. I finished the poorly made little tools that came with.....

The knife was reborn... One of my favorites now. Take a look.

Great job. I like the satin finish too. I have satinized all my horn handles.

Nice job BigJim, nice indeed!!!!  :D

I personally like a little more shine on my handles but I don't want the wood to be under several coats of anything although I do love that treatment and think that the high gloss handles are beautiful.
A light oil finish is easy to maintain and easy to put on and very suitable for an old lazy ndn like myself.;) :D

Edit:
Meant too add that I also love the satin finish on the blades. They are much easier to maintain and to me have the appearance a working knife should have.
A mirror finish is for knives not meant to be used IMO as they are to hard to maintain even though they can be beautiful.

I think high gloss is entertaining but prefer the soft satin of a Watco's Danish or just true oil without all the coats and then sanded. If a wood peice is damaged with this finish it is much easier to repair and put the scar back to looking like the rest. High gloss is harder.

Some people dye their blades, or treat the steel in different ways to impart a coloration. I think steel wool or fine sandpaper and a satin finish does the same thing and looks fine.
