i know it can be more comfy/compact when clipped on or in the pocket, but in the hand it's crap compared to my fixed blades...............

i need your vast knowledge, knifenuts.. hit me with some lists of contoured, 3d-handled folders - is it too much for them to have guards too?? sheesh, maybe i need to start making knives mydamnself, heh..

gracias in advance.

I will only carry knives with flat handles.

Try some blade manipulation drills with a round handled knife and see how well you can hold onto it. Attempt saber to reverse grip and back.

Flat is fine for me and in fact preferrable for folding knives used in defense of your person. Long knives will not be manipulated in the same way normally so I do not have a preference where they are concerned.

Will I use blade manipulation techniques to go from reverse to saber or vice versa? No, but with a flat handle knife you have the options unlike the non flat handles folders.

I like to keep the options open whenever possible.

Brownie makes a good point on this. If your intent is for your tactical folder to be more of a dedicated self defense tool, flat tends to be the better way to go.

Now, if your tactical folder is going to be more utility oriented, then I would agree with rouding or doming the handles.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any factory knives that are what you are looking for. Custom makers there are a few. Darrel Ralph comes to mind.

I don't know of any that are more round than flat, but there are some with significant 3-D contouring to provide a better grip.

The Spyderco Lil Temperance is probably the best example. The others that come to mind are the Spyderco Native III, the Benchmade 940, and the Benchmade 770.

My stag handled PCKS Buck 110, with finger grooves, is very rounded and secure in grip. But it's too thick and heavy to ever slip in my pocket comfortably. A sheath is the only way to go with this knife.

That bottom pic is sweet Buzzbait . Very nice knife, except for the serrations. Personal preference is all, I like my plain edges.

My Buck 110 finger groove is just right. Very comfortable to work with. I made a pancake sheath with no flap, just wet molded it to the knife. The blade was trashed when I got it so off to Buck it went. Came back with a BG-42 blade and I am a very happy camper. One other thing about the 110 style knife is that nobody pays any mind to them.

Try checking out the BM5000 Auto Axis and the BM520 Manual Action. Both have nicely contoured handles that aid in grip and control.

I didn't think of those, but he's right. Very curvy, comfortable too.

Find a Microtech Amphibian, they have a great handle as long as you are not too interested in reverse grip. The Socom Elite also has a good thick handle, not as nice as the amphibians though.

The Microtech LCC either manual or double action is definitely a handful. If you can find one of those, and don't mind a little weight, they should fit your preference for "rounded" although they don't offer too much in the way of a guard. Worth checking out, though.

Griptilian!!!

The 551 is one of the most comfortable handles I have ever, well...handled. It's like it was made for me. I don't find it's reletive thickness to be too much of a problem, though my AFCK is certainly eisier to carry. But we're talking about a 1/4" or so, so it's no big deal. For $60 you can't go wrong!

Roger that.

Three inexpensive options are:
CRKT Lightfoot Urban Shark
CRKT Cascade
S & W HRT Magnesium

The last two have guards

Kershaw Blackout/Whirlwind, any of the early, bigger speedsafe knives will have a rather beefy handle. Actually too beefy for me to replace it when my blackout got stolen - I wanted something thinner. :)

Hope it helps.

Burke.

anything made by Larry Davidson will have significant contouring :)

also try the RJ Martin Avenger

If you don't mind going custom, I really recommend Mike Obenauf knives' handles. They are very, very comfortable. I have owned his regular small models and I now own two Mini Model 2s, and they are wonderfully comfortable users. As for factory knives, the Native III has a nicely rounded handle and the regular Native is flatter but still nice. Finally, I would also second the Griptillian and Mini Griptillian.
