Tactical Folder W/ GutHook

I need a tactical style folder with a gut hook built into the back of the blade.

Every folder currently made with gut hook has one on the back of the blade near the tip that would severely limit the knife’s ability to puncture and penetrate.

I would like a liner-lock folding knife, made from S30V with a combo edge and a gut hook integrated into the back of the blade that does not dramatically alter the profile of the blade. Ideally the blade would be between 3.5” and 4” and the knife would weigh 4.5 to 5oz. I don’t want or need anything fancy. This will not be a collector’s piece, it is a knife I plan to use hard.

Does anyone have a knife like I am describing? If not, can it be made? I appreciate any response. Thank you.

You might consider getting a regular folder that might be ideal and then have one of our members here modify it to your specifications.

For the last 5 or 6 years I have used an Emerson cqc8 for everything and it has performed admirably. I spend a considerable amount of time outdoors hiking, hunting, and fishing, and have abused my tool in ways it was never indented. I will admit I am terrible at maintaining my equipment, but as long as I occasionally sharpened it, my knife performed like new. My knife is now starting to show it’s age (there is a divot in the blade, and it’s a little looser than it should be) and it is time for a new one. The one thing I have wished I had on a few occasions was a gut hook on the back of the blade and I was wondering if this is something that is possible.
I own other knives. When I go camping I have a camping knife and a multi-tool that is intended for the task. I often go boar hunting with dogs and have for years. When I go pig hunting we do not use guns, we use a knife. If and when we decide to kill the animal I have a large 10” knife that is intended for this task. I have skinning knives that are to be used when I am gutting and skinning anything from squirrel to deer to pig.
Even though I own these other knives, for one reason or another they are not always with me when I need them. My pocket knife always is. It is waiting for me securely in my pocket at all times. As such, I have used my Emerson to cut through large branches over 3” in diameter, kill 300lb hogs, and skin animals large and small. Not to mention opening cardboard boxes, cutting carpet, and every other mundane day to day task.
Due to the fact that I am not always as prepared as I’d like to be, I need a knife that in a pinch can do it all. One feature that could make my CQC8 better is a gut hook designed into the back of the blade. This would be helpful for cutting cord and skinning. What I have in mind is not the typical gut hook that is placed at the tip of the knife on the back of the blade that dramatically changes the blade profile. I am thinking of something less dramatic that can be integrated into the back of the blade without severely limiting its ability to penetrate.

There is the Buck Folding Alpha Hunter. You can get it in rosewood or black...which I guess would make it tactical. It has the guthook. However, it's not made from S30V but from 12C27Mod Sandvik. Anyway, might be worth checking out.

Talontwo, I agree. I use the word "tactical" only to give an idea what I'd prefer the blade shape to be.

Motts, the buck alpha is not at all what I have in mind. The gut hook dramatically changes the blade profile and renders it useless for puncturing and penetrating.

If you're only looking to cut cord with the hook, you might be better off just getting a knife that has the other features you're looking for. What's an extra 2-4 seconds if you lose the ability to stab or puncture, something you seem to really want in a knife?

Read the title and thought it was a joke....

When would you ever need both in quick sequence unless you intend to melee the deer then field dress it without putting the knife down... if this is the case... we're not worthy to be speaking with you.

Ok... so I reread your reply... i Guess it kinda makes sense... that said.. I prefer to picture you stalking a deer, knife in hand, ready to stab then clean the animal without ever having to put down your knife...

myowngod,
The funny thing is, you’re not wrong. As I said I do some pig hunting with dogs, but they aren’t the only thing we catch. I have a greyhound/pit cross that I have a lot of fun with at night. We sneak on golf courses and catch deer. He runs and grabs them and I humanely finish them off. I then perform a quick “poacher’s butcher”. The trick is to do all this quickly and efficiently. If I am ever stopped I can’t have multiple or large knives on me. If I do, the old “Sorry sir my dog ran off, I had no idea he would ever catch a deer…” wouldn’t work. A folder in my pocket doesn’t arouse much suspicion. So I need a knife that can quickly dispatch the deer and field dress it right there. My Emerson CQC 8 does the job, but it would be better with a gut hook.

How do you finish off the deer? I struggle to see how carrying two blades is more risky then a skinned deer...

Rather than me going into details about what I will be using this knife for, can someone please point me in the direction of someone that can make it for me.

If someone knows a bladesmith that does custom work for a reasonable price, please point me in the right direction.

So what you really want is a professional poacher's knife? :jerkit:
The game wardens in your neck of the woods must be either really stupid or lazy if you haven't got caught yet.

Have you considered a folding knife with a gut-hook feature not integrated into the blade at all, something like the Buck Crosslock (available in S30V) or any of the various "rescue" knives offered by Benchmade (e.g. Triage), Fox MPSK, Leatherman Klamath, Gerber Metolius, Outdoor edge Swingblade, etc.?

Finally, don't go out poaching, it makes all hunters look bad and gives the anti-hunter crowd more ammunition to use against us (irony intended).
