I had just gotten gotten the March 2001 issue of the Tactical Knives mag., there is an article named "Multiple Folders for Survival" on pg 52. Jeff Randall stated that "Resting total survival upon one folder is something I refuse to do."

My question is that do you agree on that. In my humble opinion, I do. But I do what to know is what you guys out there would choose for a good combination.

Perhaps it would help if you said what the context of that statement was. Is he worried about breaking locks, or losing them, or blade grinds, or what?

I wouldn't take along just one folder (if I could help it) either, as if it broke you'd be in trouble! Folder for fine work, fixed for the tough stuff. I guess that is where he's getting at?

Jeff knows his stuff and I would not challenge him lightly in his field, but why folders? I like folders just as much as everyone else and for my daily comings and goings they are well suited. But in a survival situation, give me big, hard, strong, easy to sharpen, hard to break one piece, fixed blade, full tank knives. I'm talking A-1, Project 1 and their ilk.

Well partly, Jeff's reasoning is that there are a lot of "issues that affect survival under adverse conditions."

This is survival we are talking about, folders such as a Victorinox RackSack plays a good role in that. I guess what Jeff is trying to say is that besides a fixed blade, folders is something we can't go without in outdoors. Also, fixeblade may draw attention when you enter a popluated village whereas as folders such as CRKT Kasper can be a good concealed protection kife.

That's why I would like to know what would you guys choose for a good survival combination, I am still exploring the issue, I know that Victorinox Workchamp will be my first choice.

Not sure what he meant by that since I didn't read the article. I own lots of folders and like them for the fact that they are much easier to carry for normal use. But if i was going into the wilds and I had a choice, i'd leave them all behind and bring a fixed blade. Less to go wrong.

A fixed blade like one of the Chris Reeve or Randalls would be my choice. For a folder, a Sebenza would still do it for me.

I have pick out another good knife, Spyderco Military Model (I love Linerlocks)

I prefer a pair of Spyderco Militaries (one serrated & one not) in the woods to supplement my fixed blade of choice that weekend. Usual fixed blade is an A1, but I'm gonna try out my Greco MST Mk II-5 sometime soon.

I usually have a neck knife and/or another folder or 2 tucked away in the pack just in case.

Oh Ya, a neck knife would be good too...

Thanks for answering this for me

I think the Survivor show has lots of folks thinking that survival is based on when we want it to happen. In actuality, a survival situation is more likely to happen when we are least prepared. Personally I dont walk around everyday with my Chris Reeve or Kabar strapped to my side....I do have a couple of folders though, and yes they do carry a lot better in places I don't want people seeing a knife on me.

Jeff-
Nice to hear from you, good article you have written. Guess you are right, survival situation do occur when you least expected, something like the movie "Cast Away".

What would be your favorite folders combination then??

I would agree wholeheartedly. What would happen if one broke ar was lost.
I would also like a couple of good sized fixed blades with me. You can do more with a fixed blade.

I've seen in various places before where you held both these folders in high regard. However, would you summarize why these two at this particular point in time? And would the Military be plain edge or serrated?

Well gee, I was going to post some good info, as I dug out my issue and read the article again, but this Jeff guy came on and said what I was going to say!

Jeff wrote highly about the AFCK and the SERE in other articles, so those would be good folders to choose. A nice Swiss army for the saw and other tools would be great too.

Jeff: would a multi-tool with a saw be better than a SAK?

I'd take my 4" Kit Carson Model 4 in CPM420V and a Busse Battle Mistress, I believe.

Model 4 for most cutting tasks.
Busse for chopping mostly.
