Earlier this year the Editor of Tactical Knives, Steve Dick, ordered one of my Improved Bowie models. In the November issue it is featured in the Kitchen Cutlery column on page 72. Also, on page 39, there is an ad for JK Handmade Knives featuring a photo by our own Mike Kasson (Tahts-a-dats-ago).

Here is Steve`s knife.

That's very cool, I'll keep an eye out for that issue. I LOVE my Improved Bowie.

Very cool. I was tempted to send Steven some pics of the Galley Wag. I may just do it now.

That's great John.
I'm glad I put my order in when I did because I have a feeling your wait list will start to fill up fast.

I hate to be ignorant when it comes to knives, but that doesn't look like a very thick blade. Overall it looks like little more than a fancy kitchen knife that a professional chef might be using for light cutting work.

I'm just not seeing the tactical aspect of it.

"Tactical Knives" is the name of the magazine that John's knife is featured in.

I am not sure what the point of your post was. You can't even see the blade thickness in the picture. If you are ignorant about knives....why post such a strong opinion on a maker's forum? Rather inflammatory, if you ask me. You might not like the knife. You don't have to. but, to say what you said as a first post in the forum....poor taste Charlie.

I don't want to bog this thread down (sorry John), so if you want to discuss....please PM or email me.

I'm going to try to find the magazine. Thanks for reminding me John. It's a very big honor to have one of my pictures in your ad.

John mentions, in his post, that the Improved Bowie is featured in the kitchen cutlery section of the magazine. Others have pointed out the fact that the magazine is named Tactical Knives. I'll point out the fact that you're wrong in thinking this knife is limited to light cutting work (not that there is anything wrong with a knife made for light cutting work).

I own the original Improved Bowie. It is among my favorite knives and while I do use it in the kitchen (quite often) I can assure you that it is not limited to light cutting duties.

I did a review of the knife, here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/925970-JK-Improved-Bowie?p=10506788#post10506788

The basis for John's version - Herter's Improved Bowie - has been used by outdoorsmen for decades now. The style works very well in a variety of tasks. John made it better and the magazine took notice of that.

I'm not a tactical guy, but if i was going to chose a tactical knife "thick" wouldn't be high on the list for a number of reasons, but besides that I have a JK knife in 3/32 that I trust just as much as my esee in 1/8...i think it's 1/8 anyway, I'm going to have to check that now.

If you actually read my post you would see that I don`t claim for this to be a tactical knife (whatever that is.) It was designed for general outdoor or kitchen use. If you hang around here long enough, you would realize that most of my knives are based on old style outdoor knives, I don`t do much in the way of "tactical", whatever that is. Would you care to post your defination of what a "tactical knife" is? I should also mention that I did not submit the knife for the column, Steve bought it for himself, and liked it enough to write the column about it.

Hi Charlie -

Welcome to the JK forum.

Your question is reasonable - most people associate the term "tactical" with black coated, pointy chisels used for military or defense operations.

Such is not necessarily the case - although the magazine "tactical knives" tends to have the "black helicopter" theme - at least on the cover stories.

John just makes durable, well thought out knives - and the tactical use is in the eye of the knife-holder.

In the case of this Improved Bowie, it is just a great knife made better by a great maker.

Stick around and check out John's other stuff - a lot of which is designed by the folks who frequent this part of the forum!

best -

It looks like this issue might be on sale at the bookstore now. I`ve gotten 3 calls about it today, no orders, but hopefully that will change.

I recieved my copy today at my PO box, great 1 1/2 page article on the knife. Relates it to the origianl Herter knives, has a pic of the knife with some sliced vegetables and another with a few other bowie style knives.

I'd be interested in purchasing one of these if you could do g10 for the handle, and add some jimping to the spine? I would like to support your business.

If you could do this, that would be great.
