Tactical Knves Mag

Thanks Skyhorse, been a reader for years, didn't get any notice. Everything changes I guess. Thanks Gary

Oh,I guess that's why I did get the September 2014 issue yet ?

I think a thread about this popped up a few months back and from what I gathered in that, subscribers such as yourself are going to be issued refunds. If I remember correctly.

Thanks for the link, skyhorse. I missed that original thread. I had no idea that Tactical Knives was done! I must say, this hit me like a punch in the gut. Of the Big Three knife magazines, TK was by far the one I enjoyed most, as it more closely followed my knife interests. It often spotlighted knives and assessed them in ways that Blade and Knives Illustrated simply ignored. I know it had its faults, but TK was a welcome replacement after Fighting Knives shut its doors all those years ago. I learned a TON from its contributors, and I even hoped to write for it myself one day. Ah, well....

Steven Dick, John Larsen, Chuck Karwan (RIP), Bob Kasper (RIP), Jerry VanCook, Mike Janich, Leroy Thompson, Tim Stetzer, even recent addition Phil Elmore, as well as all the other writers/reviewers: You gentlemen did an outstanding and under-appreciated job of advancing the field of tactical knives and their use, and you put out a magazine that you can be very proud of. Thank you. I will miss the thrill of a new issue of Tactical Knives arriving in my mailbox. I only hope that someone else takes up the mantle.

-Steve

P.S. - As a subscriber from the magazine's inception, I must say that I'm angered that I had to learn of its demise from a post on Blade Forums! Harris Publications owes its customers more respect than that. I expect restitution for the balance of my unfulfilled subscription, as well. Pitiful customer service is unacceptable, and the memory of such a great magazine should not be sullied by this kind of skulking departure from the scene.

Yep, dead in the water.

I had just mailed my renewal check a few days before it was announced, they mailed it back to me.

From what I gather, they are only refunding subscription money to those that actually call and ask for it. I know one person that was refunded about a year and half's worth when he called.

Glad you got your check back. At least Harris did the right thing by you.

Good to know. I'll call them this week. Thank you for the heads up.

Thanks to all for the kind words. After 20 years of writing for TK, I was very sorry to see it go.

FWIW, nobody on the editorial/contributor side--including Steve Dick--had any head's up that TK was going away. One day, we just got an e-mail saying it was over.

Some of the articles that were still pending publication in TK are being repurposed for Harris' new publication "Survivor's Edge." It just hit the newsstands and takes a VERY broad-scoped look at survival, including everything from prepper-style skills to self-defense. I don't envision it having a strong knife-oriented content, but it seems to be Harris' primary venue for knife articles.

On the positive side, I recently wrote my first article for Recoil and continue to maintain a very strong relationship with FMG Publications. I look forward to writing a lot more for both of them. As part of my new Martial Blade Concepts Distance Learning Program, I am also offering a newsletter and online library that will include my own independent articles and product reviews.

Thanks again for 20 years of support and readership!

Stay safe,

Mike

I was so sorry to see you guys go, yours was the last knife magazine I bought, it was the best out there. RIP Tactical Knives. :(

RIP Tactical Knives.

I enjoyed many, many happy hours with this great mag, but the bloggers and the forums really can put an end to printed and specialized stuff, for good. I will cherish my collection of issues, I just wish there will be a .pdf archive.
The price, lately, was too much for me to justify subscribing to it from abroad. And some of the articles were just too positive to be credible.
What can be printed that cannot be said or displayed on the web, today ?

Good to know. I saw Steven Dick at the big knife show in Oregon this year and I think the TK announcement was just a few days before that. He looked pissed off. Can't blame him. It really was a well done magazine.

Sad to see that the idea of the end of the world is more profitable for magazine publishers than the publication of cutlery reviews or collector´s interest articles. Maybe calling it "tactical knives" instead of "practical knives" was it´s downfall in the long run. But if you grace the front cover with the latest "Badass Bagdad Battlemistress" or "ATM Stiletto Livesafer", that is what you will get.

Got any suggestions for blogs or sites that do knife reviews? I'm familiar with edgeobserver.

you should take a look into this very forum. "mistwalker" is doing great stuff here, he wrote for TK and designed knives.
or just google the particular model. youtube is always a source with some people doing sensible and thoughtful reviews (with the exception of those starting with "hey whats up, guys...") in ways you just cannot print, sorry.

Tactical knives fueled the imagination,
It didn't matter if one actually used knives or not,
It just set the standard for anyone who had a thing for buying knives.
A rock solid content and layout that burst out screaming adventure for the closet "you name it".
This was a magazine which Created Exciting and sensational cutlery news and views about stuff that
Mattered.
I figure it was definitely a trend setter an an important outlet for the knife industry.
Damn, I can't imagine what a void it's demise would have in so many areas.
It would be like the equivalent of "vogue" magazine suddenly gone off the stands...
I sure hope to see a publication or something similar if not new and improved
would make a come back and fuel the cause someday.
There must be a Trend setting editorial to spearhead the direction of style!
