I was looking around the net at knives and on one dealer site noticed this: Blackie Collins Assisted Opening Letter Opener

It's non-magnetic, assisted opening, has dual thumbstuds, pocket clip and is made entirely of zytel. All black as well. Pretty tactical for a letter opener or what??? Or is it only marketed like that (like those Advanced CAMPING Folding Knives :) )?

It says that the only metal part is Beryllium Copper springs. So does this mean this letter opener won't sound off metal detectors?

ah thanks vamp.

my method of searching for threads must have escaped me today :)

btw, "assisted opening" in this case refers to the thumbstuds and not any other mechanism right?

curious, I have one of those...I would agree with the posts on the other thread that it is mostly a novelty item...

the spring assist works like a Kershaw speedsafe...you must "activate" it by applying slight pressure to the thumb-studs...then the blade flies open.

Sounds like something my father-in-law would love. He's addicted to assisted-opening knives and would appreciate that sort of letter opener. Now if Case or Ka-Bar could make an assisted-opening Hobo knife/spoon/fork set, I'd have his holiday shopping covered.

Personally, I'd like an OTF Spork. That'd be the coolest non-consequential automatic ever.
