I should probably post this over at www.candlepowerforums.com of on a gun website, but I thought I'd give it a try here.
I'd like to mount an ITI/Streamlight M6 Tactical Light/Laser under the muzzle of a Remington 870 (ahead of the magazine). Surefire and others recommend keeping lasers on the centerline and it also makes sense to keep them close to the bore.
I'm thinking of having a gunsmith silver solder (or epoxy if it will withstand the recoil forces) a mounting rail to the bottom of the barrel (opposite the front sight) with a coil wire going to a pressure switch on the forearm. Wilson Combat/Scattergun Technologies solders or glues Trijicon tritium rifle sight onto their 870s, so it should work. The advantage would be the ability to mount a light and/or laser (1) as close as possible to the bore's centerline and (2) with no protrusions that stick out from the weapon. IMO 4 or (with a 1-round extension) 5 12-gauge #1 buckshot rounds should suffice for the vast majority of home defense encounters.
Opinions?
For those of you with the Mossberg 590, Insight Technologies sells a "Colt lug mount" that will mount the M6 Tactical Light/Laser on the bayonet lug of an M16. I think it might work on a 590, too.
