Tactical Over Used?

Does anyone find that this term is getting worn out? Seems like everywhere I look it's tactical this or tactical that. We have tactical knives, tactical ink pens, tactical key chains, tactical flashlights. I'm waiting on a tactical spork.

I have a fairly low tolerance for buzz words. Perhaps this one is just a problem with me but I am really getting tired of the term. Just wondered what others thought.

I'm not quite sure what tactical is supposed to mean. To me it's synonymous with cross-hatch diamond jimping, black coatings and thick handles with large, accentuated bevels.

However I'm never what what "tactics" are being discussed. I mean, are we talking about combat tactics or what? I've had people tell me that the black coating on blades is so that they don't "shine" and give away people's "positions" so I've always figured that was the implication.

It sure is. Just like a few years ago the word "extreme" was over used. First was the X Games and extreme sports which was fine but the word go watered down to meaninglessness with things like "four cheese extreme quesadilla".

When I hear the word tactical used in reference to knives, I straight away think of blades that are too thick to cut properly, pointless non-reflective coatings, square shaped handles that hurt after you've used them for a few minutes, unnecessary thumb rests etc which serve no purpose other than hurting your hand, and the words 'marketing gimmick'.;)
As already pointed out, it's just another 'word of the moment'.
I even saw a 'tactical' paracord bracelet for sale a while back.
Unbelievable....

OWNED, yeah I can understand that big time. Even some knife review guys on youtube consider a 710 a TACTICAL FOLDER....not really. But hey what can you do? I think honestly the REAL tactical knives are Microtechs...seriously talk about a quick organ stab....those pierce amazing and thin hit your target and your done. Not many knives to me SCREAM tactical.

So what does "tactical" mean? Does it fit the items where it's used as a description?

According to answers.com.

Tactical:

adj.

1.Of, relating to, or using tactics.

2.Of, relating to, used in, or involving military or naval operations that are smaller, closer to base, and of less long-term significance than strategic operations.

3.Carried out in support of military or naval operations: tactical bombing.

4. Characterized by adroitness, ingenuity, or skill.

I guess none of those apply. :D

Like the above post shows...... they are all using tactical in the wrong way. Your knife can't be tactical, you can do tactical things with it though ;)

now back to tactical browsing

When somebody says tactical, this is what i think of. Please note the tactical push-dagger for deanimating sentries.

Tactical is just short-speak for martial use. Offense/defense. As opposed to utility.
If someone can come up with a word that is less insulting to sensitive souls, they're welcome to try.

the tactical spork is just an expensive, titanium version of the crkt eat'n'tool

im not sure which one came first.

Don't think tactical just means getting some guy's guts out on the floor. Not originally anyhow.

Tactical use can also involve opening stuff like cans and boxes and crates. Prying and digging earth and sand. Cutting ropes, using the knife as anchor, tent pole. All that stuff.

Just now it's become a fashionable word.

Uhm. Deanimating cans and boxes makes one a Mall Ninja. I think that you have this all wrong my friend!
