So I'm looking at getting a folder for tactical/rescue purposes and I've got my eye on something along the lines of a Boker Magnum AK linerlock or a SOG Flash II.
A couple of burning questions are 1/2 serrations or no (why/why not)?, AUS8 vs 440? I'm a bit new with this so any guidance would help.

I can't recommend the Boker Magnum series of knife, as I think there are many others out there that would do far better.

Regarding serrations, too many of them are course and bumpy. If you need something that will cut through a seatbelt and which exhibits a great deal of strength, I recommend you look at the Spyderco Military or the smaller Spyderco Native. Both have excellent blade steels and are very popular.

Other good knives are made by Benchmade and, of course, the Cold Steel Voyager series of knives is a personal favorite. I'm not a big fan of linerlock knives, either, and that's another problem I see with Boker's Magnum series. The Cold Steel Recon 1 is a knife I've used and enjoyed. For emergency use, that would be on my list as well.

I've never had an SOG, so I can't vote for or against.

Not exactly "tactical" , but the Victorinox Fireman is worth consideration.

(Sorry for the poor quality pic)

Locking , one hand opening , partially serrated main blade.

Curved "seatbelt cutter" blade.

Good saw & some of the other goodies that you might want on a SAK.

Just another option to look at.

I recommed the Benchmade Griptilian, either 551 or 550HG. They are easy to open and close while wearing firefighting or extrication gloves.

I personally don't like serrations. A sharp plain edge does everything that I require from a knife.

SPYDERCO ASSIST!!!!!!

i've used it several times now, both for seatbelt, clothing cutting and and have used the glass breaker several times too.

a high quailty tool.

buy them all! i did! I demo them to any Emergency Services person thats interested (they all are....)

Thanks guys for all the input. After looking at everything from the Griptilian to a Victorianox and quite a few in between, I've settled on a SOG Trident. I think that this knife has all the qualities that I'm looking for and will fit my particular needs. I also ordered a War Tech knife which was cheap but has 440 steel. Maybe in a few weeks I'll post my impressions of them here.
