Looking for a quality knife to throw in my bug-out bag. Not sure that I'm going to be carrying the knife daily or not yet. in my state any 'concealed' knife would have to be under 3'' on the blade or it's a felony. so that's one reason I might not take it around with me everywhere. You're probably thinking well just buy two knives and that would be a good point. Although I'm curious if there is something that would fill both needs. Why have a rescue knife if you don't have it on you right? I saw some good recommendations in other threads like the Gerber Hinderer CLS that really caught my eye in the looks department and the window punch/cutter to give it that tactical use. This seems like the winner at ~$50, but it is also 3.5'' on the blade. What else comes to mind for you guys that would fit my needs? Thanks

Kershaw Shallot was another sexy one, but 3.5'' and no rescue features.

Out of price range. I'm starting to like the Kershaw Cryo, reminds me of the $200 ZT 0550 but affordable and well under the 3'' limit. Maybe I should do a $30 Cryo and another Rescue knife in the $50 range.

For me, a tactical blade is a knife, that is sturdy, reliable and suited for fighting. While a rescue knife shares the first two aspects, it however is NOT suited for fighting. A rescueknife needs a dull tip, so you dont stab yourself, or the person you want to rescue. A seatbelt cutter, glassbreaker etc. stuff a tactical blade, ussually does not have (with exception of a glassbreaker, maybe).

That's because the same person designed them.

That's very cute reminds me of a hawk's face. I just noticed on amazon that you get $10 off any order of Kershaw products over $50.
Read alot of reviews on the Cryo saying how terrible the blade angle is and it scrapes on itsself. Bleh. I really wanted that too.
Still think I'm gonna go with two knives now, one under 3'' for EDC the other for the bugout bag.

Yup but one of them is $200 the other is not. What are similar to these two between $30 and $200? Skyline has all the glorious reviews I wish the Cryo had. But the skyline just doesn't have the visual appeal to me. the 0550 and Cryo seem to be the best looking ones.

A lot of people on here have had problems with Amazon. If I were you I would save up $60 for a FFG Delica, and spend less on a bugout blade. Your going to end up using the Delica more than the bugout, so why pay less for it? but if you want to keep to your prices then I'd try to find the original Junkyard dog. And get the 555HGmini grip, or the 550HG regular grip at cutleryshoppe. Then use the code "BM25" for 25% off, and then use the code "nutnfancy" for free shipping. After the codes the mini grip will be 60$, and the regular will be $70.

And that's my 200th post

What about the Kershaw Funxion EMT? 3" sheepsfoot combo-edge blade, assisted open (flipper or thumb studs), glass breaker, cord cutter, hex wrench, bottle opener, and carabiner clip, so you can clip it onto your gear/bag if you want. It's also relatively inexpensive.

The Cryo is a pretty nice little knife. The all-steel construction feels very solid, the high hollow grind makes for a fantastic slicer, and the assisted opening mechanism on it launches the blade incredibly fast. Not sure what the reported problem with it scraping itself is about. Maybe that reviewer got one that was so far off-center the blade was rubbing the liners? If so, Kershaw's warranty department will fix it for you. None of the ones I've had did that though. The blades weren't centered, but they certainly weren't rubbing the liners either.

For my BOB, I prefer a good, lightweight fixed blade. The Moras fit the bill well for that. They're not full-tang, but they're still plenty tough.

the spyderco while i'm sure great, is probably just a little plain and doesn't have any features for me.
That funxtion does seem to fill the requirements but kind of big I will keep it in mind.

With that said, how much importance should I be placing on blade material? There's 8Cr13MoV, Sandvik 14C28N, 420HC stainless, 440A and others of course ... Will the function of the knife be more important or the metal of the blade...? What's better and what's avoidable?

I bought a FFG Delica just because of all the attention it gets on here and because of how much I love my PM2 but I just gave my Delica away as a gift last month. Just wasn't for me mainly because I hate the locking mechanism on it. You can grab a Kershaw Knockout blem from Kershawguy for $40 shipped right now or with the $10 off thing on Amazon it would only be about $50 and some change. Very nice knife for those prices and you get a lot for your money. A Kershaw RAM goes for around $50 and would be another nice choice. I gave my dad my RAM for fathers day last year and I've missed it everyday since so I need to pick another one up before they are harder to find. :)
