Besides the obvious Civilian and Matriarch, which of the spydies are considered tactical,
with defensive applications in mind?

Spyderco makes very good usable tools. Good tools can cut flesh too. Any spyderco can cut flesh. For defensive action, you need to be able to cut flesh and jeans. All spyderco's qualify as very good defensive tools.
Even a well place 2 cm deep cut is good enough to turn any attacker down, so size is not really relevant when cutting.
If you want intimidation or stabbing, you need size. Go with the police, calypso ,endura , starmate, viele, herbst.....
In general, if tactical means large, these are good all good choices.

Off topic....what do you define with tactical?

I don't think it was designed with defensive applications in mind, but one of Spyderco's best defensive knives is the Wegner. Very ergonomic in a variety of grips. The blade design has a strong tip that is excellent for peircing and enough belly to make it a great slicer. This knife was designed to cut flesh. Take a look at these threads:

Message from Tim Wegner- Wegner clipit hunter or tactical? http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum20/HTML/000170.html

Don't let the fact that this knife is marketed as a folding hunter fool you. It makes an excellent defensive folder. And is my favorite Spyderco to date.

will travel...

I've heard people saying (not here) "if this knife meets this knife in a dark alley, this knife is a gonner..."

That is obviously very silly. As long as one has a blade of relatively similar size, is reasonably sharp, and won't break after making one or two gashes (knife fights don't last long!), then what type of knife used has just about no difference. 99.99% will be determined by the user of the the knife, not the knife itself.

This is different form the "desert island survival" situation where durability and functionality actually are very important.

This of course doesn't mean that one should be equipped with the best knife for the situation... there's no reason not to.

Just my $.02

Definitly the police model w/ ful serration. This knife is a hellaf stabber due to the false edge and narrow blade config, also w/ the VERY aggresive serrations, a potent slasher indeed. BTW i think only the stainless handle ones has false edge.

Again The Cricket handled by some dangerous and aggressive mind is more "tactical" than any long fixed handled by .. I don't know... Kermit the Frog ?
Who minds....anyway.
The only "tactical" tools you need are a brain with inspiration, a body with minimum training and 90% of experience in real situation...
All the rest... like a dust in the wind...
DuSt In ThE WiiiiIIiiiInd !
