I'm interested in picking up either a P'Kal, Yojimbo2, or a Karahawk. No current training in knife combat but looking to start. Any suggestions welcome. I know there is a world of difference in them but i am unlikely to get to handle any of them without purchase, so I have to start somewhere.

I am a big fan of Karambits and they are used in a variety of martial arts. So the karahawk would be on the top of my list even though the Yojimbo 2 is a great competitor as well. It is more about training than the knife.

Hi Larrybar,

Welcome to our forum. The models you mentioned are really completely different in many aspects, especially "MBC style". I would suggest that you first look at the style, see if you can get instruction in that style, and then select.

If you are just looking to be able to handle the models, then all three would be interesting.

Personally, if you're looking for one with a less specific training and a more overall/general utility then Yojimbo 2.

Start with an Endura and get the factory training knife to go with it. Then find someone competent to train you in the basics. Then when you have the start of a foundation in blade combatives try one of the models you listed. All 3 of those are specialty use knives, the Kara Hawk the most, and really dont work well outside of the skill set they were designed for. K-bits for beginners equal cut flesh and stitches or a knife left in the box and not carried. Unless you want to be tacti-cool then by all means buy what you want.

Start with a trainer. If you train enough you will be able to extend the principles to virtually any folding knife with similar carrying and opening mechanisms. Even if you buy a back lock trainer (Endura) and end up choosing a different locking-type folder for your live blade, most of what you learned will carry over as closing a knife isn't often emphasized in tactical training. Other differences will need to be accounted for but really, you need to learn the basics and any folding trainer will get you there.

So, I echo the sentiments of the previous poster here, but I'd actually go far enough to say you buy just the Endura trainer and skip the live version for now, unless you need it for other reasons.
